Description

(Nomoael.)
F. M0 ORE.
NGZZLB No. 356,598, Patented'Jan. 25., 1887.V
35 saine, taken at a b in Fig. l.
denari SPECIPICLTION forming part of Letters Fatemi: No. 356,598, dated January 25, 1889 Application filed August, 19. Serial No. QILQGT. (Nol model.) Patented in EpnglarxdMay 28, l86, No, 7,175. and in Belgium August l2, 1886, No.74,202.
vented anImprovedNozzle,v of wiiiehthe following is a speoiiiation.
The objeetof my invention is to produce a nozzle by which one, two, or three, orinore,
jets or streams of water or other liquid een he 1o produced and ejected at pleasure, and simboli,
when required, 'very simply, quiekly, end easily; and this my improved nozzle is applicable with all irefeng'ines, hydrants, hoses, pipes, 'and other-similar applianees for Whatr'5` ever purposes the saine may be used, though it is more especially applicable with portable reextinguishers, which are now so continually and 'increasingly coming into general use. Y
To carry out this object l forni a nozzle Wish yze two, three, or more passages therein, which nozzle is seeured in a ring or collar, a ilange on which engages under a. shoulder formed therefor ou a- 'eap secured on the end of the pipe. In the closed end of the eap are formed 2 5 suoli `apertures that on turning the nozzle with the ring or collar round on the nap one or more of the passages therein are open to the passa-ge of the water or other liquid,.rrlierel y one or more jets or streams thereof .are produced and ejected, as may he desired.
In order to explain my invention, l refer to the accompanying drawings.
'Figure l is a longitudinal section Vot' this nozzle. Fig, 2 is a transverse section of the Fig. 3 is an Ainverted plan View of the nozzle detached. Fig.
4 is o plan View of the cap with the nozzle and retainingeoller removed; and Figs. 5, o, and
Tere diagrams illustrating the different posi 4o tions of the nozzle with reference tothe Cap.
`0u the end of a pipe, hose, branch, orothei similar appliance, A, is secured aeap, B, the top or end ofwliieh is closed, and the face C thereof is turned or iliade a true let face. ln
this face() and through the closed top or endV of the cap B are formed three apertures, l), E, and F, as shown in Fig. -Whieli is a plan of this face C. A ring or collar, E, is passed up round this cap B, and an internal delige, il',
5o on the lower edge of the ringor Coller H en gages e shoulder formed therefor round the top or end of the cap i3. Int-0 this ring or eollar H is screwed or otherwise seeuiedthe nozzleli, 1wherein are formed or Whieh consists .of-ihree passages, L, for the liquid that is to be ejes-tod, which passages L may either he parallel with eachother, as shown in ille drawings, o1' may diverge freiner converge toward, each other, and may be oi thesorne diameter throughout, alsoas shown in the drawings, or may loe tapered or maybe otherwise arranged and formed as l may deem expedient in each particular ease; but the lower or entrance mouths of these passages L in the nase of the nozzle K in all cases are so formed and arranged as dulyto correspond or to comin unioate with the apertures D, E, and F, as is herei nafter more partienlarly, explained, and as is shown in'Fiff. 3, Wliieh is a plan of the under side ofthe saidnozzle. l. .A central stud or pivot is mede on .the under side of .the nozzle K, or, as in this easegrhere there are three passages, o projecting eol lar, lj, is'ifornied round the centre-.l `passage, L, Whieli can enter aroent-ral sockel; in the faee C of the cap B, or, as in this ease Where ili'ere are three passages, the central aperture, E, in the foce C is made large enough to receive thel collar L', or the pivot may he Aformed on the oop and the socket inthe nozzie. as may be desired.
.The hase of the nozzle K is and must be eiroul-arto screw into or dt the. ring or eollar H; lout the upper part of the nozzle l may be formed in any convenient style and shape, that shown in the drawings being very suitable. Vlhen the ring or collar H is passed into position, the nozzle K is screwed thereinto until the hase of the nozzle K, on which also is turned or made e true fiat face, is in Contact with the face C of the cap i3, when a set-serew,
lli, is passed through the ring or eollar H into areeess made therefor in the nozzle l, or in other usual or convenient manner the nozzle l is rrnly and tightly fixed and seeured in.
the desired position in and to the ring or eollar H. lhus the nozzle K, Wit-l1 the ring or collar H, can obriouslybe turned round on the cap B, as desired, being regulated and assisted in suoli revolution by the central pivot, L",
IOO
described, to produce the desired eiect of de-.
livering one and two and three jets or streams of Water or other liquid, as may be desired. ;Iu Fig. 5 the passages L coincide with and are opposite to the apertures D, E, and F, and
' ered.
therel'ore threejets are delivered. This position is also shownin Fig. 1. Then the nozzle K is turned into the position indicated in Fig. 6, the aperture D is no longer coincident with and opposite to the corresponding passage, L;
but the central aperture, E, still coincides Awith and'is opposite to the central passage L,
as, obviously, when the apparatnsis made as shown in the drawings and as described, must alwaysbe the case, as the projecting mouthLl o f the central'passage, L, constitutes the pivoton which' the nozzle K turns, and the elongated aperture -F is so formed as to be still eoincident with and opposite tothe third passage, L, and therefore only two jets are deliv- \Vhen the nozzle K. is turned into the position indicated in Fig. 7, the central aperture, E, as aforesaid, still coincides with and is opposite to the central passage, L; .but the other apertures, D and Rare not coincident with and opposite to the other passages L, and therefore only one jet is delivered. Thus and in this manner the number-'of jets or streams that issue from this nozzle can beincreased or diminished at will without `interfering with the lantecedent flow of the liquid or disconnecting the nozzle from the pipe or tube or other appliance through which the liquid is ,delivered into this nozzle, as is desired.
In like manner I can fit, as indeed is sufiiciently obvious, any other number of apertures and passages in the nozzle, producing a corresponding lnumber of jets; but I preferably always usean odd number, so that the central passage and aperture may formthe central pivot and socket', as is hereinbefore described and as is shown in the drawings. 45
It is also very obvious that I do not limit myself tothe exact shapes and proportions and details y I claim as my invention andd'esire-to securey by Letters Patentzle having a corresponding number of openingsand 4centrally' pivoted on the said cap, and a flanged collar to retainthe nozzle on the cap while leaving itfree to turn thereon, all substantially as described.
2. The combination of a dcliverypipe and cap having a number of openings with a nozzle having a corresponding number of openings, the central one of which has aprojecting month, Z', adapted to the central opening inthe cap to forma pivot and a retaining iianged collar, all substantially as andl for thethe purpose described.
3. The combination of the delivery-pipe and cap having three openings, of which one, F, is elongated, with a nozzle adapted to turn on the cap, and with three openings,l Z Z, all` substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my namel to this specification in the presenceof two sub seribing witnesses.
