GUN-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,378, dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed December l, 1886. Serial No. 220,422. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ERNsT SCHLEGELMILOH, a subject of the King of Prussia,and residing at Suhl, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Locks, whereof the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to breech-loading guns having a barrel or barrelshinged to the breechframe (so-called breakdown guns) and provided with locks, the hammer whereof acts from behind against the cartridge; and its object consists in rendering the lock more simple than those heretofore used with the said kind of guns. For this purpose the hammer is made in one piece, with a straight stern, (corresponding to the cooking-rod of other locks of this kind,) and it is guided by means ofthe said stem in a hole or channel bored through the portion of the breech-frame extending under the barrel. On the said stern is placed the mainspring, forming a spiral, and abutting against shoulders on the stem and in the guiding-channel; and in the hinge part of the barrel is formed a cam-surface adapted to act against the hammerstem and to push the hammer back when the barrel is tilted, the hammer being then caught by the sear engaging with a notch on the head of the hammer.
VOn the annexed sheet of drawings a portion of a double-barreled gun provided with my improved lock is represented by Figure l in vertical section along thecenter line of the front barrel and with the parts in the position after firing. Eig. 2 is a like view showing the barrels tilted for loading and the hammer in cocked position. Fig. 3 is atop view of the sears and the trigger-plate, and Fig. et a side view of a part to be mentioned hereinafter.
The hammer consists ofthe head a, having the'beak g and the notch or bent a, and ofthe stem b. By means of the said stem and the bush c screwed thereon, the hammer is guided in the channel Z, bored through the lower part ofthe breech-frame m. Between the bush c, forming a shoulder, c', and another shoulder, h, in the socket Z, is inserted the spiral mainspring al. This spring tends to press the stem b, with its end, which may be provided with a roller, against the cam-surface e, formed in the hinge-part a of the barrel. f is the sear, having the nosef. A
When the barrels are turned down to the position shown in Eig. 2, the camsurface e, in acting against the end of the stem b, pushes the hammer back and compresses the spring d, whereupon the nose f ofthe sear f engages with the notch a ot' the hammer-head a and keeps the hammer in a cocked state. In like manner and simultaneously the hammer of the other barrel (not shown in the drawings) is cocked. For facilitating the movement of the stem b a roller, L, Fig. 4, may be placed under the bush c. After the barrels have been loaded and returned to their normal position and also relocked, the gun is ready for tiring.
Inl order that subsequent to the discharge the beak g of the hammer, which penetrates into the bottom of the cartridge, may not hinder the barrels from being opened7 the spring el is tted in an uncompressed state with some play between the shoulders 7L and c. The hammer under these conditions recoils a little after the discharge, and the beak g is withdrawn from the path of the. breech end of the barrels.
In the gun represented by the drawings the barrels are locked in known manner by the bolt g catching into notches of the lugs 1' on the under side of the barrels, the lever 1J, and an intermediate piece. (Not sh own inthe figures.) These parts, however, do not form any portion of my invention, and they may be varied in any suitable manner. Certain other parts requisite to complete the gun-such as the cartridge-extractor, a trigger-.locking device, and indicator-pins-have also been omittedin the drawings, as they are neither involved in the present invention.
