Be it known that I, EDWARD MoOLosxnY, a citizen of thc United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic car-couplers; and the objects of my invention are to produce a draw-bar provided with an effective coupling device of this class which will obviate the necessity ofgoing between the cars to couple or nncouple the same. These objects I accomplish in the manner I5 illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

The jaw a is provided with a horizontal opening or slot, c, about the middle of its height, through which is made to passashort 5o arm, d, having on its inner end a half-cylindrical locking-block, b, the convex surface of which bears against and iits within the vertical groove c ofthe jaw a.
The arm "d, extending obliquely outward through the slot c, is pivoted, by means of a pivot-bolt, f, to one end of a rearwardly-projecting rod, g, which extends beneath the car and bears loosely within a downwardly-projecting bearing-arm, h, secured to the bottom of the car, said arm also forming a bearing for the head of a spiral spring, t', made to surround the rear portion of the rod, and having its rear end bearing against a nut on the rear end of the rod. v
The tension of the spring/tends to keep the arm din an ,oblique position, thus causing the locking-block b to'turn in its groove or su'fliciently to make its rear edge project slightly beyond the rear edge of said groove. 7O
Pivoted to the rod g, at a point in front of the bearing 7L, is the inner end of a lever, k, which extends laterally outward slightly beyond the side of the car, andis pivoted loosely with a bearing-stirrup, m, made to project 7.5 downwardly from the bottom of the car.
v Rigidly secured to the lever 7c, preferably at a point within the stirrup m, is the lower end of a vertical brake-shaft, n, which is made to extend upwardly above the top of the car, 8O having suitable bearings in or projecting from the end of the car. Where the brake-shaft a meets the top of the car, it is provided with a small ratchet-wheel, o, with the teeth of which is adapted to engage the loose end of a pawl, p, pivoted to the top of the car.
The rear end of the draw-bar is secured in the usual manner beneath the car, and is provided at its rear end with the usual spiral Spring, 1-
The outer end of the jaw c is made rounding, and is provided with a vertical couplingpin hole. The rounded perforated end thus formed is provided with a central transvers cut or slot, r.
The heads of the draw-bars andthe operating mechanism above described being alike o the various cars, a coupling is formed by brin ing the draw'heads together, allowing the jaw a of one head to extend within the open jaws of theother, and to bear against the inner curved surface of the short jaw a until its end reaches the shoulder formed in the rear of the other jaw a. The rounded ends of the jaws a as they enter strike against the rear projecting edges of the locking-block b and force them back into their seat vwithin the grooves a2, where they remain until said rounded ends of the jaws a havel extended sufficiently inward to allow the blocks to resume their normal position, thus bringing their projecting edges in rear of the ends of the jaws a and preventing the latter from escaping therefrom. By pressure on the outer end ofthe lever k the locking-blocks b are again forced, by means of the rod g and arin d, into their seats in the grooves a2, and the interlocked parts of the coupling may readily be disengaged. The parts may also be disengaged, in case the brakeman is on top of the ear, by operating the rod g and its connecting parts through the brake-shaft n.
In ease it is desired to set the coupling device so that it will fail to interlock with the couplers of other ears, the brakeshai't n may be revolved, as described, and the pawl p be Iliade to engage with the teeth of the ratchetwheel o, and thus hold the locking-block in the desired position. The same object maybe accomplished by hooking the outer end of the lever l.: to asuitablc pendent hook beneath the side of the car.
Should it become necessary to couple a ear having the above-described draw-bar to one having the well-known i'orin of' link and pin, the link may be inserted within the slot r of the jaw a and be held therein by means of a common couplingpin, s, made to passthrough the vertical hole in the outer end of said jaw.
The parts herein described are so made as to allow for such play as might be made necessary by the curve or unevenness of the track.
I ain aware that locking-blocks have been used before with similar operating mechanism; but my invention differs from these in having combined therewith the peculiarlyshaped jaws, 4which add great strength to the device. I therefore do not claim said locking-blocks and operating mechanism, broadly; but
