SAMUEL P. GROSXVELL, 2D, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASH-FASTENlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,190, dated January 18, 185.7.
.T0 all whom it may concern:
Be itkknown that I, SAMUEL l?. Cnoswnnti, 2d, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of llassachusetts, a citizen of theUnited States, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Automatic Vindow-Holding Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining` its nature.
The invention relates especially to mechanism -adapted to be used upon or in connection with car and other similar windows for locking or holding` them, when elevated or open, in any desired position.
It further relates to the use, in connection with this mechanism, of a lock for locking the close proximity to the central lifting knob orhandle by which the window is raised and lowered.
It further comprises the use, in connection with said holding device or jaw, of a bolt which is adapted to be operated by the said thumb-piece, and the connecting devices and spring which serve to hold the jaw.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of a window and windowcasing, a part of the sash and casing being broken out to show the construction of the locking devices. Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section through the sash and frame to further illustrate, in plan, the said locking devices. Fig. 3 is aview in elevation of a part of the window sash and casing, a portion ofthe sash and casing being removed to show the locking mechanism, representing the parts in a different position from that represented in Fig. l, or in that position which they would assume upon the grasping of the handle and thumb-piece preparatory to raising the window. Fig/i is a view of the Application lilcd August 2S, 1886. Serial Nn. 212,051.
(No model.)
same parts represented in Fig. 3, showing the position of the locking devices when the win-A which, preferably, is tangential to the arc of` a circle struck from the pivot c. The end of the jaw has a vertical swinging movement upon the pivot c outward from the sash, to shut upon or against the casing C of the window-frame. It is not essential that the surface c of thejaw be eccentric. It is desirable, however, that the pivot-point c and length of the jaw be such that when it is moved out the central bearing-point ot' the jaw shall not eX- tend above the line of the pivot.
The jaw C is moved tobring its face in contact with the surface c2 of the windowcasing by means ofthe spring d, operating-rod D, and the arm d ofthe jaw C, the end of the rod D being connected with the end ofthe arm d' in any desired way. I have represented the rod as having a recess, d2, which receives the end of the arm d. The spring d is represented as a coiled spring surrounding the rod D, bearing against a stationary shoulder or washer, d, and the pin d", which extends through the rod; but I would not be understood as conlin ing` myself to the use of this form of spring or to its employment in this especial place.
The operating-rod D extends from the jaw horizontally to a position back of the knob, handle, or escutcheon-plate E, and it is there connected with a lever, e, which is pivoted at c to said plateE, or to any other suitable support. The lever is in the nature of a bellcrank lever, one end, c2, connecting with the rod by means of a slot or recess, e, arranged in its end, which receives the end of the rod D, the rod having a shoulder at its end which spans the slot or recess and bears against the surface of the lever. The other arm, e, of the IOC) lever has a long slot, e5, which receives the thumb -piece E. This thumb-piece has a shank having` a square section, e, which enters the slot c7 in the plate E, and the round section e, which extends into the slot c5, and a nut, c, is arranged to screw upon the inner end ofthe round section eS and fasten the thumbpieee to the plate E. It will be seen that by this construction the thumb-piece E has a vertical movement in relation to the handle or knob B, and that it is so connected with the lever e that it can move or slide thereon as the lever is turned upon the pivot.
There may also be used a bolt, F, for locking the window in its lowest position, and it has the end f, adapted to be moved into the bolt'hole f in the side or portion G2 of the windoweasing. It is moved into and out of position by the rod D and spring d, and it is connected with the rod by means of the arm or lug f2, which extends into the recess f3 between the two lugs or projections f2 extending upward from the upper surface of the bolt. The bolt is otherwise held or confined in the easing c so as to be properlyT guided and provided with a straight horizontal movement. In order that the bolt may be moved outward suflicientl y far to properly enter the bolt-hole f when the window is in its lowest position, 1t 1S necessary to cut away or remove a section of the casing C immediately above it, as represented in Fig. l, in order to permit thejaw C to be moved outward and upward to its ful1 est extent, or so that it may not strike or come 1n contact with the casing when the bolt is pushed into place.
I have shown the thumb'piece E as placed immediately abovethehandle orknob by which the window is lifted and lowered and as centrally placed with it upon the lower cross-piece ofthe sash. This I consider to be the best position which these parts should occupy on carwindows or small windows of that character. In large windows it will often be desirable to use two knobs or handles instead of one, and to locate them each about one-third of the width of the sash from each side of the casing. YVhen this construction is employed, the locking mechanism, preferably, is arranged to be used in connection with the right-hand handle or knob. Iwould further say that the thumbpiece may be arranged below the handle or knob or at either side thereof, as preferred; but I consider that such posit-ion is not as desirable or advantageous as the one first named.
In operation the foreiinger is placed beneath the handle or knob, the thumb resting upon the thumbpiece E', the window is then lifted,
opposite casing and holding it locked in such position. To release the jaw it is simply necessary to move the thumb-piece in relation to i the knob or handle so as to draw the surface of the jaw from Contact with the casing of the window.
Of course the jaw and connecting devices may be placed in the window-sash or arranged upon the outer or inner surface thereof, as desired, and there may be arranged on that part of the casing of the window against which the jaw is caused to act a strip of brass or other suitable metal, although for ordinary purposes the hard wood of the casing answers very well.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by-Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of thejaw C, having a serrated or roughened surface, c2, pivoted to the window-sash at c', and having the arm cZ, with the push-rod D, connected at its outer end with the jaw-arm d', the spring el, the rock-lever e, having the slot e, the plate E, having the knob or handle B and a slot,c7, and the thumbpiece E, having the section e8, which extends through the said slot el into the slot cf in said lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the jaw C, having a roughened or serrated surface, c2, pivoted at c', and having the arm d', the bolt F, having the recess f, the rod D, having a lug,f2, which enters the bolt-recess f3, and a recess to re ceive the end of the arm d', the spring d, the knob or handle B, the thumbpiece E', and the rock-lever e, connecting it with the end of the rod D, substantially as described.
SAMUEL I. CROSWELL, 2D.
