UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WHITAKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
MEANS FOR FASTENING SCREEN-CLOTH TO DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,724, dated December 7, 1886.
i Application filed J anna-ry 19, 1885. Serial No. 153,290. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLEs WHITAKER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new Improved Method of Fastening Screen-Cloth to Door and Vindow Screens, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates, generally, to window, door, and like screens; and the novelty consists in the means used for retaining and securing the screen in its frame, all as will now be more fully set out and explained.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, showing a screen adapted to a frame according to the present invent-ion. cross-section onl line fr x, Fig. l.
In the drawings, A denotes any ordinary frame. It may have grooves B inthe outer side edges to permit its easy adjustment in the sash, so as to be moved up or down', or any other similar provision may be made for this purpose, or the sides may be plain at the edge and the screen held in place in any common way, as by buttons, or otherwise. To any of these details I make no claim.
In its face the inner edge of the sash all around has an open top groove, as shown at C. Into this groove the edges of the wirecloth or other reticnlated material D are turned or bent, and over these edges the rope or flexible packing E is closely fitted, so as to come iiush with the frame-surface. This is easily done, as the groove will be made of such size as to snugly hold a light and strong piece of packing or rope. This rope or packing is de- Fig. 2 is a signed to extend all round the sash; but, if preferred, it may be in several pieces, and each applied independently ofthe other. To insure the retention ot' the packing or rope in this position, it will be usually found sufficient merely to apply the paint or varnish used on the sash or frame, or sometimes tarred rope may be used, which will not need any other preparation or application to hold itin place, or the rope or packing may be held in by any mechanical means. This rope or flexible packing can be very easily applied, and will tit nicely about the corners and afford a firm joint.
I am aware that heretofore in screens and in bed-bottoms the edges ofthe flexible material u have been confined in grooves in the frame or slat by means of pieces oi' wood nailed in. This requires nicety of struciure in the case ot' screens and like devices in matching the pieces of wood at the joints, which is avoided by my improvement.
Having now described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A screen having around iis inner edge a groove combined with wire-cloth or porous material, the edges of which are fitted all around into said groove, and a continuous rope or ieXible packing placed in said groove at the sides and about the corners and secured over and upon the edges of said cloth or material, substantially as described.
CHARLES VVHITAKER.
