SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,240, dated November 23, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WILD, a resident of Valatie, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pit- :man-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
My invention relates to improvements in pitman-heads, and is especially applicable to heads operated by a double crank, the object of the invention being fully set forth in the following description.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

A is the strap or stirrup which holds the box-sections a a, which form the bearings for the wrist or pin of the double crank 0. (Shown by dot-ted lines in Fig.1.)
E is the pitmanrod. The end of the strap to which the rod is attached is split and provided with an opening, g, (shown in Fig. 3,) large enough to admit of the free passage through the same of the crank-pin. The open end of the strap is provided with the introverted flanges b b.
The keyB is a metallic plate provided with a central aperture, 6, adapted to receive the pitman-rod, and with the retroverted flanges dd, adapted to inclose flanges b b, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and securely lock the split ends of the strap.
When it is desired to secure the pitmanhead upon the pin of a double crank, it is only necessary to insert one of the box-sections in its place in the strap, then pass the crankpin through the opening 9 to place, insert the other section, drop the key B down into its place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and insert pitman-rod E through the central aperture in the key against the last-inserted box-section, which may be provided with a receivingcup, f, to receive and support the end 'of the rod.
The rod is threaded along the part which enters the head, and the aperture e in the key-plate may be correspondingly threaded, wherebya rotary movement of the rod in one direction will force the box-sections together to afford a suitable bearing for the crank-pin and hold the flanges of the strap and key firmly interlocked, while a rotary movement in the opposite direction would loosen and unlock all the parts, permitting the easy re moval of the key, whereupon the sections and crank-pin can be readily removed from the strap and replaced or inserted in another strap.
\Vhen the straps are made of one piece of metal, as is frequently the case, it is impossible to renew the pitman-head without taking from the crank its pin or removing the crank-shaft from its bearings, which is likely to occasion much delay and trouble.
Instead of having the walls of aperture 6 threaded, there may be employed threaded nuts madapted to fit the rod, one-on each side of the key, by means of which the respective parts may be secure] y locked together, as before described. Oil may be supplied to the crank-pin in the usual manner through oilhole '5.
By means of the nuts a, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2,) I can readily adjust the boxsections to wear,also the length of the pitnmnrod.
XVhen I make use of the nuts n, I do not thread the aperture c,- but leave it smooth, to permit the rod to slide freely through the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pitman-head, the combination of strap A, having an end opening, 1, between the introverted flanges b, with crank-bearings a a, and centrally-perforated keyplate B, pro vided with retroverted flanges d, interlockable with flanges b, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
