UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WASHINGTON MAYNARD, OF ASSUMPTION, ILLINOIS.
GRAFTING IMPLl-:M ENT.
SPCIPICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,879, dated November 2, 1,886.
Application filed September 3, 1886. Serial No. 212,656. (No model.) i
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WASHINGTON MAYNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Assumption, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Grafting Implements; and I do declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of .reference marked. thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion.
The invention will rst be described in connection with the drawings and then clearly Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2, a vertical-section on line w zr of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view in longitudinal section, and Fi g. 4 a partial view showing the plunger-knives and guard-plate.
In the drawings, A represents the bed of my machine, and B B two oppositely-grooved uprights, between which reciprocates a plunger, C. On the back of this plunger is a stud, c, under. which extends the front free end of aplate-spring, D, whose rear end may be fastened to a bed-block, E. On the lower end of the plunger C are arranged three'knives, F G H, so that they will (Shown in Fig. 3' of the drawings.) The knife F on the right hand cuts the shoulder f,.the front knife, G, i
makes the diagonal cut g, and the left-hand knife, H, makes the end cut, h, thus giving a definite length to the joint. The knives may be .secured under shoulders of the plunger, as Well asthe guard-plate I, by screws or screwclamped plates, or in any other suitable manner.
J J are right-angled stop-plates, iliade adjustable in grooves of the block K by set screws L L, so as to give the depth of shoulderand thickness of end.- M is a lever for holding scion and root securely in the desired position.
The machine may be fastened cna table and worked with a treadle by the foot, or by any preferred power or mechanism, the operator being seated in front thereof.
Having thus described all that is necessary toa full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new is- In a machine for cutting root-grafts, the reciprocating plunger C, having the shoulderknife F, the diagonal cutter G, and the end cutter, H, in combination with the guard plate I, stop-plates J J, and lever M, all arranged substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence 0f two witnesses.
WASHINGTON MAYNARD.
