Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Mellon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverdale, in the city and county of New York, State of New,York, have invented an Improvement in Chains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the same, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention consists in a chain made from suitable wire, thelinks of which are made from a single piece of such wire, each link being provided with twoloops or eyes, and the ends of the wire forming such'links terminating in a spiral twistintermcdiate or between the two loops in manner to securclylock each loop and to give to the chain the character of a chain madeof solid links. y

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a chain so made, the eyes of each link'of the chain being oblong in form. Fig. 2 represents the chain similarly made with eyes of round orring form. In both Figs. 1 and 2 the ends of the wire and the section of its center connecting the eyes are twisted spirally together. Fig. 3

The wire is fed from a-reel into a suitable -chain-making machine, which automatically cuts off a strip of wire of suitable length and fashions it into a link consisting ofthe two eyes a and I), with the ends of the wire terminating in a twist, 0, around, and in some instances spirally with, the section of Wire connecting the eyes, and intermediate" therewith. The machine'then cuts on a similar piece of wire, one end of which is caused to pass through the eye b, and another link is similarly formed, thus connecting both links, and this operation is continued as long as desired.

Fig. 1 represents a chain having the eyes of shown by the dotted linesin Figs. 3 and 4, and

the ends of the wire twisted around it spirally, as shown in said Fig. 3, or in coils, as shown in Fig. 4.,

In looking the ends of the wire in the twist intermediate or between the eyes of the link, I give preferenceto twisting them from opposite directions from each eye, as shown inFigs. 1 and 2, and in the lower links of Fig. 3, as in this way the two immediate ends of the wire will face each other and make a better finish; but the wire ends may be spirallytwisted from each eye, as shown in the top link of Fig. 3, or they may be coiled around the connectingsection of the wire, as shown in Fig. 4.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A chain-link made of a single piece of wire, consisting of the eyes a b and the intermediate twisted neck, a, as set forth and shown. 2. A chain-link made of a single piece of wire bent to' form the eyes a I), connected together byv the centralpart of the wire blank, the ends of the wire terminating in a spiral twist around and with the central part of the wire connecting the eyes, as set forth and shown. r

3. A chain-link made of a single piece of wire bent to form the eyes a I), connected together by the central part of the wire blank, each end of the wire terminating in a coil around the central part of the wire connecting the eyes, as set forth, and shown in Fig. 4.

4. The combination of two or more chainlinks, each made of a single pieceof wire, consisting of eyes a b and the intermediate twisted v neck, c, to form a chain, as set forth and shown.
