Y the city and county ofl-Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improve- "ment in Light-Screens for the Eyes, of which the following is a specilication. My invention has reference to light-screens Y to protect the eyes of persons involved in work requiringthe use of the eyes with strong lights; and it consists in certain improvements, all of "which are fully set forthin the following 5o the air through the said specification and shown inlthe accompanyingdrawings, which form part thereof.

Prior to vthe date of my invention lightf 4screens-have been made to fit the forehead and l extend ont so as to. protect the eyes from the glare of a strong light, and'these protectors or .screens have usually been made ofca-rd-board, either plain or covered with silk -or equivalent material, rendering them extremely heavy. A great difficulty with such screens isthat the het air'ascending'is held in contact with the eyes, and causes `them to become dry and in` Iialned. This result is more greatly aggravated when the wearer is required frein time, to time to enter cooler compartments, where1 strong coldldrafts'of night air are aptto strike the eyes. -In addition to the defect due to het air, the gaseous exeretionsfgiven off from the face are essentially carbonio acid, and this', augmented by the carbonio acid-of the breath, .renders the air around the eyes, which is held in suspension at, that location, very impure,- land liable toV produce excessive irritations from a constantuse ofthe screen. The object ofl my invention is to overcome Vthese defects by reducing the weight ofthe screen; and, secondly, by causinga proper4 ventilation of the air over the face, avoiding all collections of 'impure or hot air about the eyes. p Y, .e In'carr'ying out my inventionl provide a light wire framework-covered with silk or equivalent light-weight materiaL'and form` a passagewayor passage-ways'between the upper4 portionsthereof and that part which comes next-tothe forehead. ".The baseof the screen may be formed of wire frame E, as vshown in Fig; 2, in which the lower rimI will be formed by wire F, the upper rim, orthat which cornes next to theforehead, formed by wire G, and the Ventilatingspace B would be formed between the wire G and a wire, I-I. I are strengthening-wires, and e are loops through which the Icords D may be attached to secure the screen upon the head.

3, leaving the space `B free. The Ventilatingsereen Gis secured to the wire G, and is of sufficient length toproject'over the edge, formed of wire H, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1. This screen `C may be formed `like a rul'ile, or ygathered so as to produce the corrugations c, through which theair maybe distributed, and find egress after passing through the opening B.

It is evident that the corrugations might be dispensed with and a straight rigid extension `used in lien thereof, the only object being toA form a suitable light-screen over 'the ventilating-aperture. In place of using a frame, the silk body part A may be of -card-board, il desired.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A light-screen for the eyes, consisting of, the body portion, in'coinbinationjvith a-ven.- tilating-aperture, and a covering over said aperture to shut out the light but allowiree passage of air, Asubstantially as and for the purpose specified. y

2.' A light-screenfor the eyes, consisting of x 5 the body portion, in combination with a ventilating-aperture, and a corrugated covering over said aperture to shut out the light but allow free passage of air, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

A light-screen for the eyes, consisting of consisting of wires F, H,and G, meeting at their ends, the covering J, covering the space between wires E and H, the Ventilating pas- 3o sage-way B, formed between the wires H and G, and shield or covering C, loosely covering the passage-way B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
