Be itknown that we, A Lnxaxnnn T. BnowN and Witnnn'r L. Snrrn, both residing atSyracase, in the county ot' Onondaga and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Catches tor (lun-Locks,ofwhich the followingisaspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists in certain improvementsin the construction ot' the safety locking mechanism connected with the gun-lock of a breakdown gun, substantially as hereinafter claimed.

The tang 2 extends backward from the breech-piece as usual, and carries'the top lever, 4, eonneeted to the action-post 5. The trigger-plate 6 is held bythe main serew T, andbears the trigger 8, all these parts being ot" usual eonstruetion, with exceptions hereinatter noted.
Near thetop ol` aetiolrpostthere is ashonlder or arm, 9, havinga t'aeewhiehbears against the slide-bar 26, which bar extends baekward ln the under part ot' the tang` are two reeesses, 10 and 11. Back. of these recesses there is a slot, 12, and notches 13 are made in the lower tace ot' the tang stillin rear ot this slot. A sliding plate, 15, on top ot' the tang has astud, 16, eX- tending through the slot 12.

The triggers 8 have eaeh a slot, 14, eut in or through them, and a rod, 28, has pins 29, which enter said slots. llhe Vupper end ol' rod 28 enters a moi-lise, 21, in the sliding bar 20.
The safety-bar 2O is guided so as to move longitudinally ol' the tang by pin 23 entering slot 22 in said bar, and` its front end, when in its torward position, vis in thc line ot' movement ot' sliding bar 26. rlhe front end ot' the salet'vbar 20 and the rear end ot' slide-bar 26 may be turned out ot' the line ot' prolongation ot'their respeetivebodies, so as to bein line t'orengagement. (See Figs. 1 and 5.)
The pieee has a knob, 1t), and an open slot, 1 8, above the tang. (See Fig. l.) lhe tang bears the word sale, orsome other indicating deviee, whieh shows through the slot 18 when the pieee l5 is in itsintermediate po sition, but is eovered when the slide is pressed either to t'ront or rear.
As shown in Fig. 1, the triggers are in nnlocked position. A pull on the trigger raises bar 28, so that its upper end enters reeess 10 in the tang. The movement ot' lever 4 ,in nnlocking the breech causes shoulder 9 on the action-'post 5 to press back the slide-bar 26, and this inV turn n.esseS baek the safety-13111720 and carries the top of bar 28 into positionbetween the recesses 10 and 1l. in the tang, as in F ig. 2, so that the triggers cannot be raised by pulling. The indicator now shows the word safe tlnfonghslot 18. This position el the satetv-bar 20 is as tar to the rear as the move- .mentj otslide 26 extends, and the engagement ot' tooth 25 with raek 18 holds the safety-bar in this position.
Then it is desired to throw the sal'ety ap paratus ont otI engagement with and free it from the eontrol ot' the lever apparatus, the bar 2t) is drawn (by button 19) still farther back, and the top ot' rod 28 is then under recess 11. rllhe trigger mayv then be pulled with` out hinderance from said rod, and the safetyslide will be held bythe tooth engaging the IOO rack in the tang. rlhus the sat'ety-eateh ma)v be thrown into or out of engagement wit-h the barrel-looking eateh or lever, and may be operated either by said. .lever or b v hand, or may be left (in rear-most position.) entirely inoper ative.

3. The combination, in a gun-1oek, ot' a trigger-locking rod extendi ug upward from the lock mechanism and having itsnpper endj ust beneath the tang, a slide beneath the tang embracing the top of said rod, a slide or button on top of the tang ('onneetedto saidinner slide and having a slot therein, and the tang having two recesses and an abutment on its lower tace in line with the different positions of theloeking-rod, and having an index on its upper snr face which is visible through the perforation in the sliding button in one position, but is covered in other positions of said slide, substantially as described.
