SHAWL-STRAP.
SPCIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent No. 349,899, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed February 25, 1886. Serial No. 193,110.
To all whom it may concrn:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. PERKINs, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shawl-Straps,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming` part of this speci- Iication.
My inv'ention relates to the class of devices, ordinarily known as shawl-straps, which have binding cords or straps fixed to a handle which is mounted in a frame, the said straps serving to secure the shawl or package.
The objects of my invention are to render more efficient and simple and to cheapen this class of devices.
To the above purposes my invention consists in the certain new and peculiar construction and arrangement of the essential parts of the device, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective of my improved device. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of Fig. 1, taken on a plane cutting the handle and frame lengthwise and vertically through their Centers, and with the straps shown in portions. Fig. 3 represents a partial view, in section and in full, of a modified form of my device. Fig. 4 represents an end view of Fig. 3.
In the said drawings like numbersdesignate like parts throughout.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the frame, with its surfaces fiat and in the main is straight, with the oblong slots 6, parallel and in pairs, disposed near the ends of said main part. The ends of frame 5 are bent up- -rightly, and have the eyes 7 correspondingly located and in aligninent. The tie-rod 8 is mounted in the eyes 7, and at one end has a fixed head, which takes against the outside of the frame, and at the other end is screwthreaded to receive the thumb-nut 9, which binds against the outside of the frame. Upon the tie-rod 8, and within the upright ends of frame 5, is loosely mounted the two-part handle 10 11. These parts 10 and 11 are similarly made, being spindle-shaped, with the hubs 12 at the outer ends, and having the central channel, 13, for the reception of tierod 8. The

parts of the handle 10 11 come fiatly together at their inner ends, as at point 14., and are freely rotary in 'either direction upon the tierod 8; The straps' 15 and 16 are alike, of the same length, and are passed through the slots 6 in frame 5, so as to be looped on the under 'side of said frame, as shown, to receive the shawl or package and bind the same. The free ends of straps 15 and 16 are fastened, end to end, upon the hubs 12, which are reelshaped, to allow room for the said straps to be wound around them.
From this description of the construction of the device it is obvious that when the thumbnut 9 is loosened, so as not to bind against the frame 5, the parts 10 and 11 of the handle are each rotary independently and in the same or opposite directions, each part thereby winding its attached strap upon its hub, as desired. By this construction the straps 15 and 16 can each be regulated by itselfas to the size of the loop by turning the respective parts 10 and 11 of the handle. Vhen these parts 10 and 11 have been turned to adjust the loops of the straps as desired, the thumb-nut 9 is then turned so as to bind tightly against the frame 5, thereby compressing the parts of the handle 10 11 together at the point 14, and holding them immovably in the desired position by virtue of 8c the tie-rod 8.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown two modified features of the device. I use in this form, in place of the thumb-nut 9, the cam-lever 17, which has three limbs, as shown, the forked pair of which are hinged upon pintles upon the nut 18,which works on the scrcw-threaded end of tie-rod 8. The nut 18 is adj usted properly to give the cam-lever 17 just enough play to bind against the frame 5 and compress the parts 10 and 11 of the handle together against displacement by turning on the tie-rod 8. In Fig. 3 the cam-lever 17 is shown in binding position, and when it is to be released the lower upturned end of the same is lifted out from the frame and carried up beyond the tierod 8, so as to pass the point of the cam action of said cam-lever. VVhen it is desired IOO tween the inner ends of the parts 10 and 11 of the handle the concavo-convex washe'rs '19,' which are mounted on tie-rod 8, and serve to give a slight spring action in compressing and releasing said parts, thereby avoiding the dead-pressure, and giving easier action to the device. These washer's may be of any suitable well-known material-'such asrubber,
leather, or cork'-or as an equivalent to theV and durable device, that is easily and quickly adj usted to secure irregularly-shaped bu ndles. The lstraps may of course be differently arranged and still be equivalent to that shown by me. For instance, only one end of the strap may be fastened to the hubs, while the other may be fastened to the frame or wound thereon suitably.
In constructing the device I preferably make the frame, the rod, and the thumb-nut of metal, the two-part handle of wood, and the straps of leather. However, these materials'may be changed as desired.
There may be various modifications made in the several parts of my device without substantially departing from the spirit of `the invention herein described and claimed.
I am aware of the heretofore use of a twopart or divided handle in bundle-holders,and
hence do not broadly claim such as my invention.
Having thus described my in ention, I cl'aim v as new and desire to secure by Ltters Patent- 1. In combination, a transversely-divided handle and straps therefor, ,a tie-rod extendr ing loosely and entirely through said handle -iveends of said tie-rod, provided at one end With a fixed head, at the other end with an adj ust-able nut,whereby the halves of said handle may be independently rotated or rigidly bound together, substantia'lly as described.
3. The combination, With the frame 5, of
lthe tie-rod 8, set in said frame, and the thumbp nut 9, and of the two-part handle 10 11, provided at the outerends with the holding-straps 15 and 16, respectively, substantially as described.v
4. The combination, with theframe 5, provided With the slots 6, and having the upright ends perforated at 7, of the tie-rod 8, provided with the thumb-nut 9 and set in said perforations 7, and the two-part handle 10 11, provided With the reel-like hubs 12 and channels 13, and the straps 15 and 16, affixed to said hubs and passing down through said slots 6 in the frame, all substantially as and for-the pur-` pose described. i
