LAMP AND LANTERN ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,765, dated September 28, 1886.

Be it known that we, JOSIAH SWETT and GEORGE \V. BRAoE, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Granville and Southwick, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements inLamp and Lantern Attachments for Carriage-Shafts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in lamp and lantern attachments for carriageshafts, the object being to provide improved devices for supporting a lantern or coachlamp on a carriage-shaft in advance of the 1 carriage at the side of the horse, whereby the light therefrom will be thrown farther forward than it iswhen the lamp is attached to the carriage in the usual way.

In the drawings forming part of this speci 2o fication, Figure l is a front elevation of a lantern-support embodying our improvements,

showing a lantern suspended thereon and the carriage shaft in cross section within the bracket by which the latter is secured to said 2 5 shaft. Fig. 2 is a rear-perspective view of the lantern-supporting devices, the lantern being removed therefrom. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail parts, which are full y described below.

In the drawings, A indicates a section of a 0 carriage-shaft, and B is a clamp-bracket secured on shaft A, to which the said support and lantern or lamp aresuspended. The said clampbracket consists of two metallic shells, 0 c,of suitable form to clasp and fit onto the oppo- 3 5 site sides of the shaft of a carriage, and to encircle, or nearly so, said shaft when secured thereto, as shown in Fig. 1. Said bracketshells are hinged together at w, and the lower one, o, is provided with an arm, d, the end of which is reduced and made round, and a nut,

Fig. 3 is a view of a part of the side of the clamp-bracket B, from which the arm (1 projects, looking directly at the end of the latter,

5 nut 11 being removed, thereby furnishing an unobstructed view of that part of said arm or the end of the latter back of its said reduced part, wherein are set a series of projecting pins, 2, whose purpose is described below.

The upper one, 0, of said bracket-shells has an arm, 0, thereon extending over the upper side of the said arm (I, as shown, in which is a thumb-screw, 0,which screws into the latter arm, and thereby the said shells are clamped and locked on the shaft A, and are conveniently released to allow of opening them to remove them from said shaft. The end of the arm 6 terminates at that part of arm d in which the said pins 2 are fixed.

The part of the device to which the lantern or lamp is directly attached consists of rectangular ilat metallic plate It, having an arm,

Fig. 4 is a face View of the side of arm 1, which in practice is brought against the said end of arm d when the nut 12 is screwed against it.

The above-described pins zand perforations f provide for swinging the plate to different inclines on arm d and then engaging said pins in the holes f, thereby firmly retaining said plate in said inclined position without danger of its swinging back to a vertical one; and, furthermore, said pins and holes serve to hold plate It firmly in a vertical position after nut 22 is screwed against the side of arm 1..

The purpose of providing means for main- 8o taining the plate It in other than a pending vertical position is, that it may be desirable during deep snows, or under other circumstances, to swing the plate upward. The plate h has secured thereon centrally, as shown 8 5 by dotted lines in Fig. 2, a projecting hookstrap, of the usual form, to receive a hook on the rear side of the reflector J, and near the upper edge of plate h are secured two lantern-hooks, K K,Which project far enough beyond the side of said plate to hook under the upper ends of the tubular part of the lantern H, as shown in Fig; 1, and near the lower edge of plate h are secured two other lanternhooks, l) D,which engage with the lower part 5 of said tubular portion of the lantern H. Said hooks K are bent upward and are flexible, and the hooks D are likewise flexible and bend downward, and normally occupy the positions shown in Fig. 2, but when engaged with 10 0 the lantern, as in Fig. 1, are sprung up to about the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby securing an action of said hooks against the said tubular part of the lantern in opposite directions, and obviating any danger of the disengagement, accident-.

The clamp-bracket B may be secured at any desired position on the shaft A, or it may be permanently secured thereto, as it does not project laterally far enough to be inconvenient, and the lantern-plate h may be left on the bracket or removed at pleasure.

What we claim as our invention is 1.
