.UNrtrinD STATES? ATENT @trienio XVILLIAMYBELL, OF VERONA, MISSISSIPPI.`
FENCE.
E'LJECIFECATION forming part of Letters Patent Non 349,559, dated September 21, 1886.
Application filed AprilA 7, 1886. Serial No. 108,11. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, 'WILLIAM BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Verona,
in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specifi cation.
The object of my invention is to produce a combined frame and wire fence, .which shall possess sufficient strength, without t-he use of barbs, to repel stock.
The fence is constructed with horizontal and vertical wi res firmly tied at their intersections, and with diagonal wires, which are also similarly tied at their intersections tothe horizontal wires and to each other. As a/ finish and for additional strength a top rail is also emg ployed.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents an elevation of my improved fence.
The horizontal Wires l are fixed,by nails or staples 2, to rigid wood or metal posts 3, and are arranged at any desired distance asunder. Spaced suitably between the posts 3, and con- -nected to the horizontal wires l by wire ties 4,
are vertical wires 5, which take the place of palings. Y
-6 6 are diagonal braces, fixed by nails or staples to the tops and bottoms, respectively,
of alternate posts, in such manner that they will cross each other at center. At their points/lof. crossing they are tied with wire 8, which may also unite them to the upright wires 5 at those points. Similarly the diagonal wires are tied at 9 9 to the horizontalr wires 1i The top rail, 10, connects the posts 3, for increasing at the same time `the rigidity and ornamental effect. v
I am aware that, broadly considered, it is not new to construct fences with horizontal wires, vertical Wires, or pickets, or diagonal wires extending from the top of one post to thebottom of the next post, and vice versa, separately considered. Having thus described my invcntion, the following is whatI claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
Aj combined frame and wire fence consistingj of posts 8, having staples 2, continuous horizontal wires threaded through the poststaples, vertical wires 5, diagonal wires (i, extending -from the bottom of Vone post to the top of the next post, and vice vcrsaffastenings S, securing the crossed diagonal wires at their intersection, fastenings 9, securingthe diagonal wires to the horizontal wires, and
`fastenings 4, securing the vertical wires and horizontal wires together, all substantially as shown and described. 1
