E21c 47/00; E01c 19/30 U.S. Cl. 299--37 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates more particularly to travelling implements for ramming or subsequent compaction and/or trimming of the edge portions of roads, more particularly tarred roads.
A number of road edge trimming and ramming devices are known provided with vibratory rams and are used for example `during the laying of a tarred road surface to compact and simultaneously accurately trim the transitional marginal part between the actual running surface of the road and an edge strip, for example a concrete edge strip, so that a neat dividing or terminal edge between the running surface of the road and the marginal strip is formed. There is the practical difficulty in this work that the cutting implement must be precisely steered in order to obtain a neat and straight terminal edge. With known devices steering is carried out by hand but this requires a considerable amount of skill and a high degree of attentiveness; `but unfortunately even when these requirements are fulfilled the results leave to be desired.
One object of the present invention is to provide a ramming and trimming device for the edges of roads which is so constructed that it can operate without constant manual steering. A further objectof the invention is to provide an implement capable of working more accurately and neatly than known implements.
The present invention consists in a road constructional implement comprising a carriage; fore and rear Wheel means for supporting the carriage; a transverse support bar on the carriage; a reciprocating tool mounted on the support bar and capable of being set at different positions along the support bar athwart the direction of travel of the implement; laterally projecting means, abutment means on the laterally projecting means for engaging an upright surface for guiding the carriage ata constant distance from the upright surface, the abutment means being arranged to engage the vertical face at at least two horizontally spaced positions; and means for setting at least one of the wheel means at an angle to the vertical surface for holding the abutments against the vertical surface during travel of the implement along a path parallel to the vertical surface.
The implement can comprise two pairs of wheels and means for steering both pairs of wheels. Means can be provided for mounting the tool for tilting in relation to the vertical surface.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention the reciprocating means is arranged so that it can be ice moved in translation and vertically. Also the guide means can be arranged so that it can be adjusted both in the horizontal and in the vertical direction.
Owing to the positive guidance or steering of the edge ramming and trimming implement, which is preferably brought about by setting the travelling wheels so as to make an angle with the direction of travel, an accurate and straight terminal edge is produced between the surfacing of the road and the edge strip of the road. As a further connequence of this guiding action the ramming and trimming action of the implement is improved so that it is more economic in use.
One embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

In the road edge ramming and trimming implement constituting the embodiment of the invention reciprocating ramming device 1 is used whose bottom end is provided with a detachable knife 1. The reciprocating ramming device 1 is carried on a transverse beam 2 by suspension means 2 and is thus connected to the frame 3 0f the device. With the aid of the suspension means 2 the ramming device can be moved in a lateral direction for adjustment and can also be pivoted through a given angle as indicated by double arrow a in FIG. 2.
The front wheels 4 of the frame 3 can be steered, that is to say tilted about vertical axes by means of a cross bar 4' and steering :rod 4". The Wheels can be locked at given angular positions about their vertical axes of tilt by means of a screw 5. The rear wheels 6 of the frame 3 can be swung to the right or to the left to a certain amount. This tilting or swinging is carried out by means of a turnbuckle 7 and a transverse rod 7'. The magnitude of the angle of swinging or steering can be read oif from a scale 8a or 8b so that the tilt of the wheels can be setto the same value without any diiculty.
The guiding means connected with the frame of the implement carries guide wheels or rollers 9a and 9b whose horizontal carrying rods are supported in mounts 10a and 10b allowing horizontal adjustment while their vertical carrying rods 9a, '9b' are carried in mounts 11a and 11b so as to allow vertical adjustment. With the help of these guide means the lateral distance of the rollers 9a and 9b from the frame of the implement and their vertical position in relation to the vertical edge of the road can easily be adjusted. By setting the front and rear wheels 4 and 6 an even pressing action of the guide rollers 9a and 9b against the vertical outwardly facing edge of the road is obtained. Alternatively the rollers 9a and 9b can be caused to press against a kerb, facing the middle of the road.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown in the drawing and described above and includes all variations within the scope of the following claims.
As shown in FIGURE 2, the implement runs along a road comprising a concrete main layer B covered with tarbound grit or the like A. The machine trims olf the irregular marginal strip A along a regular line parallel to the edge of the road.
What we claim is:
1. A road constructional implement comprising:
acarriage;
fore and rear wheel means for supporting the carriage;
a transverse support ibar on the carriage;
a reciprocating tool mounted on the support bar and capable of being set at different positions along the support bar athwart the direction of travel of the implement;
