J. CAESAR.
EXERCISING DEVICE FOR MUSICIANS.
No. 348,379. Patented Aug. 31, 1886.
Jig-X INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS CAESAR, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
EXERGlSENG QEVlCE FOR MUSICIANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,379, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed February 24, 1886. Serial No. 193,020.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS CAESAR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Exercising Device for Musicians, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and. improved exercising device for piano and organ players, which is adjustable to fit the players wrist and is weighted to suit the players ability.
The invention consists of a plate provided with an adjustable wristband and of a number of plates provided with spring-catches.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improvement attached to a player's wrist. Fig. 2 is an end view of my improvement. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the wristband-fastener.
My improved exercising device is attached to the wrist of the player, so that the latter when exercising on the piano or organ carries an additional weight on his wrist, which increases the strain on the muscles of the hand and forearm, and thereby develops superior flexibility and strength of the fingers, wrist, and arm, to enable the player to eX- ecute powerful and rapid passages of music without dil'liculty when afterward playing without this device.
The plate A, of metal or other heavy material, is slightly concave on its top, and. to one of its side edges is fastened one end of a band, B, of leather or similar material, the outer end of the band I3 being clamped on the plate A by the clampingbar 0, provided on one end with a hook, C, which is attached to one end edge of the plate A, and on the other end with a downwardly extending spring-catch, 0, having the shoulder C, which engages a notch formed in the end of the plate (No model.)
A. A dowel-pin, C, is attached to the clamp ing-bar 0, near the spring-catch G, which pin engages a corresponding aperture in the top of the plate A, so as to hold the clamping-bar C securely in place on the plate A.
An additional plate, D, can be attached to the under side of the plate A to increase the weight of the device. To each end edge of the plate D is fastened one or more spring-latches, D, which project above the plate D, each being provided on or near its upper end with an inwardly-bent shoulder or lug, D which cngages with a corresponding notch .01] the end edge of the plate A, so that the plate D can be attached to or detached from the plate A at the will of the player. A plate, E, similar to the plate D, and provided with similar spring-latches E, can be attached to or detached from the plate D in the same manner as the latter is on the plate A. Any number of such plates D and E may be added to the device to increase its weight.
The device is placed on the players wrist by disengaging the shoulder C of the springcatch 0 of the clamping-bar G from the notch on the plate A, so as to free one end of the band B and allow the player to place the under side of the wrist part of his arm on the concave top of the plate A. The band B is then drawn tight over the wrist and slipped between the plate A and the clamping-bar G, which is pressed downward on one end, so as to spring the shoulder G into its notch on the plate A, thus securely attaching the device to the players wrist.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In an exercising device for musicians, the combination of a plate with a wristband and a clamping-bar, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an exercising device for musicians, the combination of a plate and attachable additional plates with a wristband, and a clamping-bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an exercising device for musicians, the plate A, in combination with the wristband B, and the clamping-bar O, provided with the book 0, the spring-catch 0 having vided with the hook C, the spring-catch C, the shoulder O, and the dowel-pin 0', subhaving the shoulder C and the dowel-pin C, 10 stantially as shown and described. substantially as shown and described.
4. In an exercising device for musicians,
5 the plate A and the plates D and E, each pro- JULIUS CAESAR vided with spring-latches D and E, having WVitnesses: shoulders or lugs D or E in combination with THEO. G. HOSTER, the Wristband B, and the clamping-bar 0, pro- 0. SEDGWIOK.
