NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID F. REINHEIMER, OF NEWV PARIS, OHIO.
WIRE-TWISTING WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,293, dated August 31, 1886.
Application fil ed April it, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LDAVID F. REINHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Paris, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Twisting \Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichitappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wire-twisting wrenches, and has for its object the twisting over and over each other two or more wires in the construction of a fence holding pickets or palings between said wires, the twisting or overlaping being done between said pickets.
My invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application and forming part of the same, in which- Figure 1 shown is a plan view of my invention, showing the slotted body having radiating arms. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing one wire in a slot and the opposite wire against the periphery and handle in place to begin to twist or overlap.
Similar letters refer to like parts through out the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body or grip piece, which is formed of metal or other suitable material, said body or grip piece being formed, preferably, circular in shape, though I do not confine myself strictly to this form of construction, as any other suitable form may be used without departing from my invention. Said body or grip piece A is formed with slots or recesses a, cut inward from the outer edge of the same, the purpose of which is to receive two or more wires, 1) b, and firmly hold them while said body A is being revolved, thereby overlapping each wire one upon the other in rope form, or to hold any material that said body A may be able to twist or overlap when revolved.
Body A is formed with projecting arms B,
Serial No. 199,085. (No model.)
firmly secured to said body by screw-threads or otherwise, or said body A and arms 13 may be formed of one piece of cast or malleable iron or other suitable material. The purpose of this construction is that when the material to be twisted or overlapped is inserted in the slots a body A is revolved by the operator grasping one or more of the arms B, presenting one of the slots a downward or toward the wire, forcing one wire into the slot a, resting the outer edge of the body A on the opposite wire,b, then turning the body A by means of said arms B toward the operator. This construetion and operation is shown very clearly in Fig. 2, in which wire I) is shown projecting from slot a, and wire I) is shown resting against the outer edge of body A and the inner end of arm B. As the handle and body are revolved the wires are twisted or overlapped one on the other, wire b approaching wire I) at the slot until the twist is finished in a lipshaped overlap as slot (4 makes a sharp bend in wire I) in starting the twist. Said slots a may be cut into the body A V-shaped or of any desired shape, whereby said wrench may be used for twisting or overlapping any material other than wiresuch as long, flat, or wedgeshaped metal strips used in constructing fences.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A wire-overlapping wrench consisting of a circular body having radial arms, and provided with a short slotin its periphery adapted to receive and hold one strand of wire while an opposite strand rests against one arm and the periphery of said body, whereby one strand of wire may be overlapped on the other, substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID F. REINHEIMER.
