Wm ATTOR NEYS United States Patent ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for attaching storm window or screen to the window frame. The device comprises a channel member attached to the window frame, an angle support having at least one opening therein attached to the sash of the storm window or screen and a hooked hinged plate designed to lock into the channel member and hook into the opening in the angle support to thereby lockedly attach the storm window or screen in place.
My invention relates to improvements in window supports, and more particularly to hinge attachments for storm windows, or screens.
The prime object of my invention is to provide hinged supports for storm windows, or the like, that enable the said storm windows or screens to be easily removed or replaced.
Another object of the invention is to provide devices of the character described that are suitable for mounting onto either side of the storm windows or the like.
Still another object of my invention is to provide mountings that are elongated for the screen or storm sash which frequently are separated at the joints near their tops.
A further object of the invention is to provide devices that may be easily stamped out of sheet metal for economical reasons.
A still further object of the invention is to construct devices that will enable the screens or storm sashes to be applied from the inside, without the use of ladders, or the like.
The devices may be attached, or released, from the inside without the use of tools, or mechanical skill.
It is apparent to anyone familiar with removing or replacing storm sashes or screens that it is often inconvenient when ladders or the like are employed, and it is the prime object of my invention to provide simple devices that may be easily applied to the window frame for retaining storm sashes or screens in a fixed position.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical view of the device, with parts in cross-section as applied to the window frame and showing the upper portion of both the window and the storm sash in cross-section.
FIGURE -2 is a top view of the device as applied to the window frame and the storm sash or screen.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of-the device applied to the top of a storm sash or screen.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of an angle support which is applied to the top of the storm sash or screen.
FIGURE 5 is a side view of the hinge plate.
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of the hinge plate inserted into the angle support.
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of the channel which acts as the hinge plate support.
FIGURE 8 is a perspective view of the channel in an open position and the hinge plate inserted therein; and
FIGURE 9 is a similar view as shown in FIG. 8, with the channel in a closed position to retain the hinge plate in a fixed position.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same, the character 10 shows an angle support designed to be attached to the upper edge of a storm sash or screen shown as 11. The angle 10 is provided with two rectangular openings 12 near the opposite edges of the angle 10, and a plurality of apertures 13 spaced in any convenient manner to accommodate fasteners, such as screw 14 (see FIG. 3) for retaining the angle 10 in position on the storm sash 11. There is shown a channel 15 cut out at twooppositely disposed areas 16. The channel 15 has apertures 17 within its base to accommodate fasteners such as screw 17a (see FIG. 2), when the channel 15 is mounted onto the vertical ledge 18 forming a part of the window frame. An angular member 19 integral with the channel 15, is also provided with an aperture shown as 20 (see FIGS. 7, 8 and 9), to accommodate a screw (not shown), to fasten the channel 15 to the upper horizontal ledge of the window frame.
The channel 15 is provided with a member 21 hingedly mounted at 22 and retained in a locked position as shown in FIG. 9 by means of two oppositely disposed inwardly projecting recesses 23.
A hinge plate 24 (see FIG. 5), may be fabricated of a flat piece of metal, of angular contour having a hooklike projection at its upper end, more particularly its upper end is equipped with'an upper recess 25 and a lower recess 26. Its lower end is provided with oppositely disposed protruding sections 27 and 28. Means are provided for having the hook-like upper end engage and disengage the support plate. For example, the recesses 25 and 26 are not in alignment. The recess 26 extends more toward the front of the hinge plate than does the upper recesses 25.
The shape and contour of the upper end of the hinge plate 24 is designed to enable the recesses 25 and 26 to engage the rectangular openings 1'2 as shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 6. To insert the hinge plate end into the rectangular opening, the hinge plate 24 is positioned diagonally relative to the openings and then turned to a vertical position. The misalignment of the recesses enables the storm windows that are held by the inventive supports to swing open at the bottom thereof for purposes of ventilation. Inasmuch as the rectangular openings 12 are on both ends of the angle support 10, it may be attached to both ends of the upper edge of the storm sash 11. The hinge plate 24 engages the open areas 16 of the channel 15, and the sections 27 and 28 of the plate 24 are in direct alignment with the channel 15, and the hinged member 21 retains the plate 24 in position in the channel 15 when held in position as shown in FIG. 9 by the member 23.
The angle 10 may be applied to both sides of the upper end of the storm sash or screen 11, which has a slot 29 sawed therein (see FIGS. 1, 2 and 3), to permit inserting the hinge plate 24 while in engagement with the openings 12 in the angle 10. This arrangement prevents side play in the hinge assembly.
From the above description it will become manifest that the device is simple in construction, is easy to manufacture, and positive in its operation. Although I have shown a specific construction and arrangement of the parts constituting my invention, I am fully cognizant of the fact that many changes be made without effecting its operativeness, and I reserve the rights to make such changes as I may deem convenient, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
1. A device for removably attaching storm windows or screens to window frames,
said device comprising support means fixedly attached =to thesashes of said storm windows or screens,
channel means fixedly attached to said window frames and positioned relative-to said support means,
at least one hole in said support means, and
plate means,
said plate means contoured at one end thereof to engage said at least one hole in said support means and shaped at the other end for locking into said channel means to thereby removably attach said storm windows or screens to said window. frames.
2. The device of claim 1 wherein said support means is an angled support means.
3. The device of claim 2 wherein said angled support meansahas one face on the front of said sash and one face on the. top of said sash and wherein said sash is slotted with said slot aligned with said at least one hole in said support means. a r
4. The device of claim 1 wherein said contoured end of said plate means comprises hook means, and
wherein said plate means is angularly shaped so that the contoured end is higher than the other end.
5. The, device of claim 4, wherein said hook means comprises a top recess and a bottom recess at said contoured end of said plate means, I
said top recess defining a hump means which prevents the forward movement of said storm window or screen to thereby retain said hook means in engagement with said support means at said at least one hold.
6. The device ofvclaim 5,wherein said channel means has a pair of oppositely disposed cut-outs, and
-4 wherein said other end of said plate means comprises protruding means in direct alignment with the channel of said channel means.
7. The device of claim 6, wherein said channel means comprises a hinged member locking means including said hinged member for locking said plate means in position in said channel of said channel means.
8. The device of claim 7, wherein said locking means comprises two oppositely disposed projecting nipples for holding said hinged member locked and juxtaposed to said plate means in said channel of said channel means thereby locking said plate means in position.
9. The device of claim 8, wherein said upper and lower recesses of said plate means are misaligned to enable said storm windows to swing open for purposes of ventilation.
10. The device of claim 9, wherein said channel means is angled to enable fastening said angle means to vertical and horizontal portions of said window frame.
