EXTENSION-TRIPOD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110347.927, dated August 24, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMANN EssER, of Hoboken, in the count-y of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in Extension-Tripods,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved eX- tension-tripod for surveying and similar in strnments, the legs of which can be conven- IO iently extended or pushed back, so as to take up small space and permit of readily setting up the instrument on uneven ground; and the invention consists of a tripod provided with extensible legs, each leg being composed of 15 two sectionsa hinged section and a sliding section-the latter being guided by an obtuseangled side on thehinged section,and by means of bands attached, respectively, to the hinged.

The sliding section a is guided in an obtuse-angled recess of the sectionc, its adjoining side being shaped correspondingly, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Then the extensible sections are drawn out to the proper length, they are clamped by means ofthumb-nuts and washers I) I), or other suitable clamping devices arranged in connecnection with the bands or clips I) b. The extensible sections a are provided near the upper ends with stop-pins e 0, so as to prevent them from being drawn out entirely and detached from the sections a.

The essential feature of my construction con- 0 sists in the form of the cross-section given to the sections a a, as by this form the strength of the same is not impaired, and no pockets or recesses formed on the outer sides of the legs in which the water can enter and cause swelling of the wood or otherwise act injuriously, and finally the legs are not weakened or rendered apt to get out of order.

H aving thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent- 60 An extension-tripod composed of hinged legs, cach'formed of a hinged section and a sliding section, which are guided by bands and secured by clamping devices, said sections being guided along each other by means of obtuse-angled adjoining sides, substantially as set forth.
