. CHARLES F. SMITH, OF FITOHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
ICE-FORMING BOX'FOR ICE-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,550 dated July 13, 1886.
Application filed March 15, 1886. Serial No. 195,267. No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. SMITH, of Fitchburg, 'Worcester county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Ice-Forming Box for Ice-Machines; and Ihereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved ice-forming box. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a top view with the cover removed,and showing the coil and drip-pans beneath the pipes.
My invention relates to ice-making machinery, and especially the ice-forming box used in such machinery, and has for its object to provide a means whereby the ice may be frozen from the top of the water-cans,whereby transparent ice may be successfully formed instead of cloudy ice.
To this end my invention consists in a combination and arrangement of devices, as hereinafter fully described, and spccificallypointed out in the claim.
In the said drawings, A is a well-insulated liox,provided with insulated partitions A A,
to form chambers B B for the reception of the freezing-cans G O. The side of the box is providedwith doors D D, to enable the placing and removal of the freezingcans. I prefer to have these doors cover two or more of the freezing-chambers; but the doors maybe arranged to suit those practising the invention. The freezing-cans are provided with the usual tight-fitting covers, and above'these covers is an air space, E, and in the top of this space,
near the cover of the box, is a refrigerating coil, F, through which the cold brine or other refrigerant is circulated, and the heat is extracted from the interior of the box and the contents of the cans O C until the ice is formed and ready for removal. I propose to use on the coil F, as a coating, a certain mixture of petrolina and glycerine, described in my application filed of even date herewith, and this would cause any moisture condensed on the coil to drip from the pipes at once. In order to revent this dripping water from falling into the box, I provide a continuous draingutter, a a, lying beneath and coincident with the convolutions of the coil,and sustained from the coil by hangers b'b, and having an exit at d through the casing, andawater-trap pipe, 6, to insulate the temperature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An ice-forming box or casing for ice-making machines, consisting of the insulated box A, provided with a series of insulated doors, D D, and partitions A A, with their edges adapted to receive the flanges of the freezing cans O, in combination with a refrigeratingcoil, F, supported in the top of the box, and a drip-receptacle, aa, coincident with and be-v neath the coil, and having a trapped exit, d c, all constructed, arranged, and operated as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES F. SMITH.
