J. A. STRONG. BOX FASTENER'.
Patented July 6, 1886.
a I I WITNESSES .Atiarney N. PETERS. Plume-Lithographer, Wnshingwn, n. c,
TJNITE STATES FFMIE.
ATEN'I BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,875, dated July 6, 1886. Application filed November 21, 1885. Serial No. 183,561. (Model) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ALEXANDER STRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gain, in the county of Ellsworth, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.
This invention relates to improvements in box-fasteners, and has for its objects to furnish fastenings whereby a box or case may be strongly, durably, and cheaply constructed without the use of nails, and at the same time whereby the lid may be quickly and securely attached to the top of the box or be removed therefrom. These objects are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations taken from the opposite ends of the box. Figs. 4and5are detached detailed views of the lugs and by means of which the lid is secured to the box when shut. Fig. 6 is a side elevation. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line am: of Fig.2, a partbeing broken away. Fig. Sis asectional view on the line yyof Fig. 3, a portion of the eggcarrier box being broken away.
The letter A indicates the top, sides, and ends of the box, which may be made of wood or any other suitable material.
B is a malleableiron casting having lugs or hooks b, which enter suitable recesses or openings, 0, in the end casting, C, also of malleable iron.
B is a malleable-iron casting having a lug or clasp, I), which enters a suitable opening in a handle, d, forming part of the casting O. This lug b has an opening for the passage of a spiral wire, d, by means of which the cover is locked to the box for transportation.
The castings BB are of malleable iron, and are secured to the lid of the box by means of the rivets e. The castings O and G are also of malleable iron, and extend a short distance over each side of the box and are secured thereto by means of the rivets 6. These castings are provided with handles d.
It willbe observed from the above description that the use of nails is entirely obviated in the construction of this carrier or box and their place supplied by sixteen rivets, (more or less,) and that the malleable-iron castings add greatly to the strength and durability of this carrier.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1s- In a box, the lid having at one end a malleable-iron casting provided with lugs b, and at the other end a malleable-iron casting provided with lug b, in combination with a box having at one end a malleable-iron casting having recesses 0, adapted to receive the lugs 79, and at the other end a malleable-iron casting having a handle, (1, provided with an opening for the passage of lug b, said lug I) being provided with a wire, (1, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ALEXANDER srRoNe.
