TOY BREECH-LOADING GUN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,698, dated June 29, 1886.

Application filed March 29, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, RANDALL W. WALK- ER and AUSTIN G. \VALKER, citizens of the ty of Ohenango and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Breech-Loading Guns; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings,making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a toy breech-loading gun constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view showing the operating parts in elevation; Fig. 8, a detail view in perspective of the bar which forces the trigger forward, and Fig. 4 a similar view of the cartridge.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and easilyoperating toy breech-loading gun; and it consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the stock of the gun,having a forward section, B, pivoted thereto in any suitable manner that will admit of the section being swung down to elevate the breech of the barrel 0. as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of loading. The barrel 0 is suitably attached to the stocksection B, which is held in position by a spring-catch, a, one end being rigidly attached to the barrel, and the opposite end having therein a slot to engage with a pin, b, at the side of the stock A. The slotted or free end of the catch a is curved outward, as shown, for convenience of disengaging it with the pin, or when striking the pin to act as a cam to raise the end of the spring-catch over the pin and enable it to automatically engage therewith. The breech end of the barrel 0 is provided with a light spring, 0, to hold the projectile D within the barrel, said projectile being preferably composed of wood or other like material in contradistinction to metal, and has a cavity, (1, for receiving the common toy cap, which is exploded by the end of a plunger, E, coming in contact therewith. If preferred, a coiled spring, e, may be placed around the plunger to give extraimpetus to the cartridge when the latter is made of wood; but this is not considered essential, and the spring may, if desired, be dispensed with.

The rear end of the plunger E is suitably attached to the hammer F, and said hammer is forced forward by means of a push-bar, G, and spring H,of any suitable form or construction. The forward end of the pushbar G is notched, as shown at f, to straddle the hammer F, a shoulder, g, thereon holding the notched end of the push-bar in position. The hammer F, at its lower end, is pivoted in a mortise, h, in the stock A, and around the pin t is bent one end of a wire spring, [9, the opposite end being coiled around a pin, Z, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2. The pin Zsupports a trigger, I, the upper end thereof holding the hammer raised when the same is brought back sufficiently to have the upper end of the trigger engage with the shoulder m, thereby supporting the hammer in an elevated position,and when the triggeris pressed in the usual manner the upper end thereof is forced forward to disengage itself with the shoulder m, and by means of the push-bar G and spring H the hammer is operated and the plunger E caused to strike the cap on the projectile, explode it, and the latter forced through the barrel. The stock A has the usual guard, at, and a slotted cap-plate, K, is secured over the mortise It, said plate having an anvil, 0, for the end of the hammer to strike, and depending side plates, 1), for securing to the sides of the stock.

Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A toy breech-loading gun consisting of a stock containing a pivoted hammer formed with shoulders, as shown, a pivoted trigger, and a notched push-bar and spring operating in connection with the shoulders, a slotted cap-plate provided with an anvil and depend ing side plates for attaching it to the stock, a spring located in the breech of the barrel to hold the projectile in position, and a fiat curved spring-catch secured to the barrel and adapted to engage with a pin on the side of the stock, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
