UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUssELL LEE GOEE, or CARLISLE, KENTUCKY.
COFFEE-POT.
@SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,812, dated June 1 5, 1886.
Application filed .August 29, 1885. 'Serial No. 175,657.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL LEE GORE, of Carlisle, in the county of Nich olas and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CoffeePots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
I and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved tea and coffee-pot. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the filtering-vessel detached froin the pot, with the lteringcloth in position; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same, with lteringcloth detached, showing the device in a different position from that shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The saine letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to tea and coffee pots; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior ad vantages in point' of simplicity, durability, and general eflcieney.
With these ends in view, theinvention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described, and which will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the body of my improved coffee-pot, which is equipped with the spout B and handle C, of ordinary construction. The said body A is preferably cylindrical in shape; but
it may be made of any other suitable shape or construction when so desired or deemed preferable. Y
D designates the filtering-vessel, which is made somewhat tapering in shape, as will be seen in the drawings, so that it may be readily fitted closely and tightly in the mouth of the pot or vessel A. The bottom of the said lil' cringvessel is open, as shown, and it is provided at its lower edge on diametrically-opposite sides, with downwardly-extending arms or rods, E E,
formed of wire and connected thereto by sol-A dering or in any other suit-able manner. rlhe said arms are connected by semicircular wires F F, which form a complete circular hoop or (No model.)
I band, as shown, and which in, turn'are connectedV bya transversely arranged or diametrical bar, G, having a central downwardlyextending barb or prong, H.
l is a flat ring or hoop adapted to fit loosely upon the small or lower end of the ltexingvessel D.
J designates the filtering-clothfwhich consists ofa piece of muslin or any other suitable textile material, which before use should be thoroughly washed and scalded, so as to remove all starch and other impurities therefrom. The said cloth is adj usted upon the filtering-vessel by first inverting the latter, then adjusting the cloth centrally upon the prong or barb H. next drawing the cloth taut over the hoop formed by the semicircular wires FF, and over the lower edge of the filring or hoop I over the free edges of the cloth and the lower edge of the filtering-vessel, to which the said filtering-cloth is thus secured with the necessary degree of security.
L designates thelid of my improved ool'ee and tea pot, which is adapted to fit the upper end of the filtering-vessel D. The said lid is provided with a centrally-located downwardlyextending tube, llLreaehiug nearly to the bottom of the filtering-vessel and terminating at its upper end, above the lid, in afunnel, N, for which a lid, O,.is provided. A closely-fitting lid or cover, P, is also provided for the spout of the pot, in order to prevent the escape of the aroma of the tea or coffee prepared in the improved vessel or device. l
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The tea or coffee is placed in the filtering-vessel D, from which, for this purpose, the lid or cover L is temporarily removed. The said lid or cover L is then replaced, and the lid O of thefunnel N is removed, and the necessary quantity of hot water is poured into the vessel through the said funnel. As soon as the water rises above the lower end of the tube M it forms a seal, which effectually prevents the escape of steam and aroma from the'inside of the pot or vessel. The water will be rapidly distilled through the tea or coffee and the llteringcloth, and the liquid will then be found to be ICO perfectly clear and ready for use, having absorbed the entire strength of the tea or coffee placed in the filtering-vessel.
In the practicalmanufacture of this device it may sometimes be found desirable to make various minor changes in the construction and arrangement of details. and I would therefore have it understood that I reserve to myself the right to any and all modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the- United Statesl. In a tea or coffee pot, the combination, with a cylindrical or other suitably-shaped Vessel having a suitable spout and handle, of a tapering iltering-vessel fitting ltightly the mouth ofthe same and provided with downwardly-extending arms carrying a hoop or band, and a flat ring or band fitting loosely upon the lower end of the said filtering-vessel, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a tea or coffee pot` the combination, with a vessel having a suit-able spout and handle, of a tapering bottomless filtering-vessel the lower edge of which is provided with downwardly-extending arms connected by semicircular wires, forming a hoop or band, a 3o transverse diametrical bar connecting the said wires and having a, central downwardly-extending prong or barb, and aflat ring or band fitting loosely upon the lower end of the said 'ltering-vessel, substantially as and for the 35 purpose herein shown and specified.
3. A tea or coffee pot, in combination with a filtering-vessel consisting of a tapering bottomlesss body and having arms extending downwardly from its lower edge and support- 4o f fied. 50
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL LEE GORE.
