B24]: 23/00 U.S. Cl. 51-470 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to hand held power devices comprising sanders, polishers, power tools and the like, and more particularly to the handling means for said hand operated power devices.
In most hand held power operated tools, such as sanders and polishers, a handle protrudes from and supports the device. The center of gravity of the power device is far removed from the handle and particularly the point on the handle which is grasped by the hand of the operator; and for this reason, the hand of the operator is not afforded a steady, accurate and untiring control of the tool or device.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an overall tool design which overcomes the above-described disadvantages.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a location on the power driven tool for placement of the hand of the operator which provides for accurate, untiring, and easy manipulation by the operator thereof.
Other objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the subsequent description taken in conjunction with the typical embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
The sole figure shows the power tool held by the hand 4 of the operator thereof. The power tool has a housing portion 5 which encloses the motor for powering the tool, a housing portion 6 which surrounds the brush or sander portion which is being applied to brush or sand a particular surface, and a housing portion 7 which surrounds the shaft coupled from the motor to drive the sanding or polishing wheel in the housing portion 6. The fingers 2, 3, and thumb 1 of the hand 4 of the operator are slipped into a glove-like housing portion 8 which extends perpendicular to and is connected to the shaft housing portion 7. The hand of the operator is therefore extended in a parallel plane through the line CC with the plane of the sander or polisher housing portion 6 which houses the rotating sanding or polishing wheel.
The line AA passes through the symmetrical or central axis of the device, that is, the shaft, the motor axis and the center or axis of the polishing or sanding wheel. The line B-B passes through the center of gravity of the device along the line AA. The glove-like housing portion 8 which is in a plane perpendicular to the axis AA, passes through C-C. According to this invention the plane of the glove-like housing portion 8 which passes through the line CC is made to pass through the point defined by the intersection of lines AA and BB. In other words, the weight of the sander or polisher portion 6 is so proportioned with respect to the weight of the motor portion 5 that the center of gravity of the device about all axis is located substantially at the center of the glove-like housing 8. This is contrasted to prior art handling of power tools where a handle which is grasped 'by the hand of the operator supports the sanding or polishing wheel and its motor at some distance from the hand resulting in less control over the sanding or polishing operation. Furthermore, it is tiring on the hand of the operator to support the device and apply pressure from the end of a handle grasped by the fingers. The center of the hand-held power tool, according to this invention, is located along the major axis AA near the axis C-C through the palm of the hand. The shaft housing 7 (center axis of the device) may pass between the thumb and first finger 2 or between the first finger 2 and second finger 3 depending upon size and weight of the tool.
While it will be apparent that the preferred embodiment of the invention herein disclosed is well calculated to fill the objects above stated, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art of power tool design that the invention is susceptible to modification variation and change without departing from the proper scope and fair meaning of the following claim.
I claim:
1. A hand held power tool having a motor portion, a utilization portion and a housing portion rigidly interconnecting the housing for said motor portion with the housing for said utilization portion, a shaft extending from said motor through said interconnecting housing portion to said utilization portion and a glove-like portion for accommodating the operators hand included between said motor portion and said utilization portion and affixed to said power tool, and the weight of said utilization portion is so proportioned with respect to the Weight of said motor portion that said glove-like portion is located at about the overall center of gravity of said hand held power tool.
