CARPET-STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,412, dated June 8, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ENos B. WILLIX, of Dows, in the county of WVright and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved CarpetStretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the construction of a cheap, efficient, and durable carpetstretcher, so arranged that while it may be used to stretch'the carpet and subject it to a high strain it will not injure the texture of the fabric. 1

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved carpet-stretcher, representing the same as in position for use; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the carpet-stretcher.

Referring now to the construction illustrated in the drawings above referred to, A B represent jaws formed with ribbed faces a I), so proportioned that the ribs will intermesh, as shown in Fig. 1, the two jaws being united by a hinge-joint, G, formed from lugs c 0, made integral with the jaw B, and a lug, d, made integral with the jaw A, the lug cl being between the lugs c c, the parts being united by abolt, 6. Two notches, f f, are formed upon the side of the upper face of the plate A, that is parallel with the hinge O.

In addition to the jaws A B, constructed as just described, I employ two levers, D and E, the lever D being formed with a bifurcated end, F, of which the legs 9 g fit into the notches ff, formed in the jaw A. The upper end of the lever is provided with a series of apertures, t i i. The lower portion of the lever E is formed from a strip of stout tough wood, to either side of which metallic arms h h are bolted. these arms being formed with perforations i, the strips being so spaced that the upperend of the lever D will pass between them. The two levers are held together by a bolt, Zr, and a wing-nut, Z, the levers being adjusted so that when the bifurcated end F is brought into engagement with the jaw A and the parts placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, 'a downward pressure tween the jaws A and B, the levers being placed as shown-that is, with the foot n of the lever E against the base-board of the apartment, just above the tacked edge of the carpet, and the bifurcated end of the lever D in engagement with the notches f of the jaw Aso that as the levers are pressed downward the jaw A will be forced downward, thus clamping the carpet, and at the same time both jaws will be moved up toward the base-board H, thereby drawing the carpet to place.

I am aware that a carpet-stretcher has been formed of two adjustable pivoted levers,clamping-jaws being pivoted between their ends to two arms at the end of one lever, and provided with set-screws at tl1eir.inner ends to force their outer or forward ends down upon the said arms, corrugations being formed in the meeting faces of the jaws and the arms; also, that two adjustable levers have entered slots in the rear edges of two flatblocks, the lower faces of which were provided with pins; and I do not claim such constructions as of my invention. By hinging the clamping-jaws A B of my stretcher at their outer or forward edges, and causing one of the levers to bear on the upper jaw at its inner edge, the jaws are held firmly together without the necessity of set-screws or other devices, which, of course, materially simplifies and cheapens the construction.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A carpet-stretcher made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of two jaws connected by a hinge-joint at their outer or front edges, and formed with ribbed meeting faces and adjustably-connected levers, one of which has a bearing on the rear or inner edge of the upper jaw, substantially as described.
