Decorative plastic flower petals surround the light 'bulb and are attached to the housing with adhesive tape.

This invention relates to decorative electric night lights adapted for home use, and more particularly to a novel combination of a low intensity, cool burning electric bulb sheathed in plastic blades shaped and colored to simulate the petals and foilage of flowers.

There has long been a desire for a decorative night light to provide low intensity illumination for home use such for example as in a nursery. Until the advent of the low intensity cool burning electric bulb it has been virtually impossible, because of the fire hazard involved, to provide decorative material in close proximity to an electric bulb. As a result, no one has previously, devised a practical decorative night light sheding a soft glow of sufficient intensity to provide a desired subdued light for nighttime home use.

An object of my invention is to provide an improved decorative night light having a combination of a low intensity cool burning electric bulb shrouded by flower petal shaped plastic blades having colored shades conforming with the colors of variously shaped petals and leaves to simulate a low intensity lighted bouquet.

A further object of my invention resides in the provision of an improved decorative night light wherein various colored cool burning electric bulbs and harmonizing decorative plastic blades simulating petals of selected flowers may be combined to provide an improved night light from which soft light conforming with the decorative scheme of the room emanates.

Another object of my invention is to provide an improved method of making a decorative night light constructed by assembling individual decorative petal shaped plastic elements around a cool burning bulb, and securely locking them in place.

Still a further object is to provide a decorative night light which may be economically assembled of preformed plastic blades simulating flower petal and leaf structures in colors conforming with the colors of the various flowers being simulated.

Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an assembled decorative light embodying my invention; and

FIGURE 2 is a part sectional view illustrating the manner of forming my improved night light.

is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, my improved decorative night light is preferably constructed by utilizing an electrical plug 10 having spaced prongs 12 adapted to be plugged into a female electric supply plug conveniently located in the home or other place of use. The plug 10' preferably has a switch 14 to permit turning the light on and off so that the decorative night light may be left assembled in place so that it may be viewed even when not illuminated.

The electrical plug 10 preferably has a section of reduced diameter 16 housing a threaded fitting to receive a small diameter bulb 18. Preferably the bulb 18 is of low electrical intensity such for example as a 7 watt bulb to provide a low degree of illumination and to reduce the intensity of heat that is emanated on illumination of the bulb. As illustrated, the bulb 18 has a relatively large body portion preferably treated with closely spaced particles 20 to increase the surface area of the bulb to insure more rapid cooling of the bulb. The bulb 18 and particles 20 can, if desired, be produced in various colors to diffuse the light emanating from the bulb and to produce interesting light disperslon.

A plurality of blade shaped plastic segments 22 preferably contoured and formed of colored plastic to conform with the shape and coloring of various flower petals being simulated are secured to the reduced diameter section 16 of the plug 10. The blades 22 may be of different shapes and contours such for example as those adjacent the bulb 18 may be relatively long and narrow to conform with the shape of the inner petals of a flower, and the blades 22 positioned further out radially from the bulb 18 may be contoured to conform with the shape of the outer petals of the flower. After applying a desired number of petals 22 about the bulb 18 a suitable number of leaf clusters 24 carried by stems 26 conforming with the shape and coloring of the stems and leaves of the flowers being simulated may be applied after the application of the outer row of petals 22. A ribbon 28 formed as a bow or otherwise and of suitable color harmonizing with the coloring of the leaf clusters 24, petals 22 and bulb 18 may be applied to add a distinctive touch.

As shown in FIGURE 2 the petals 22 may be secured to the section 16 of reduced diameter by means of plastic tape 30 which may be wrapped about the reduced section 16, the lower ends of the petals being secured to the inner surface of the tape 30. It is thus possible to apply several rows of petals about the bulb 18, and it will be noted that the petals can be staggered with respect to each other in overlapping relation. A sturdy simulated flower is thus produced, and one which is attractive and sheds a soft light.

A wide range of colors of bulbs 18 and ornamentation can be provided to permit individual users to select desired combinations to match the color combinations of individual rooms.

I claim:

1. A decorative night light assembly comprising:

(a) a plug means including a housing having a portion of reduced diameter, spaced contact prongs at one end of said housing and a socket means to introduce a light bulb at the other end of said housing,

(b) a low intensity light bulb located in said socket means,

(0) means coating said bulb to diffuse the light emanating from the bulb and to provide rapid cooling of the bulb,

(d) a plurality of blade shaped plastic segments simulating flower petals and having a reduced portion at the inner ends, a first portion of said segments being narrow elongated blades simulating inner petals adjacent said bulb and a second portion of said segments having broader configurations simulating outer petals located in outer rows adjacent said first portion of segments, and

(e) adhesive tape means securing said plastic segments circumferentially around said reduced portion of said housing at the inner ends of the plastic segments to provide an overlapping relationship between adjacent segments.
