Description

March 4, 1969 J. c. ULMER 3,430,760
WOOD CHISEL SCABBARD Filed Oct. 6, 1967 INVENTOR. MA /1455' a mil/mag BY w United States Patent Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A scabbard for holding a tool having sharp edges, such as a wood chisel. The scabbard includes a strip of leather folded intermediate its length to provide complemental, facing, spaced surfaces forming a pocket to receive the blade of the chisel in sliding engagement. The pocket is reinforced with a metal outer covering. One of the pocket forming surfaces is longer than the other and mounts a spring metal plate having opposite edges rolled into tubular form for overlying and clamping the edges of the chisel blade to the surface. The scabbard not only prevents inadvertent contact with the sharp edges of the blade, but protects the cutting edge from being dulled or broken.
This invention relates to a tool scabbard, and more particularly, a scabbard for housing a tool having sharp cutting edges, such as a wood chisel.
It is an object of this invention to provide a scabbard to house a Wood chisel or the like when not in use to protect its cutting edge from being dulled or broken, and to prevent inadvertent contact with the cutting edges, which may result in skin cuts.
Another object of this invention is to provide a scabbard of the character indicated, which is simple in construction, and hence economical to manufacture.
Further objects and advantages of the invention Will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the scabbard comprising my invention, illustrated housing a wood chisel blade;
FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional view taken substantially along the plane indicated by line 22 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view taken substantially along the plane indicated by line 33 of FIGURE 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein like numerals indicate like elements throughout the several views, the scabbard of the present invention is generally indicated by the numeral 10.
Scabbard includes a soft leather strip 12 folded intermediate its length along line 14, to provide complemental, facing, spaced surfaces 16 and 18. The overlapping portions of surfaces 16 and 18 form a pocket 20, for receiving in sliding engagement the blade 22 of a Wood chisel or the like, having a sharp cutting edge 24.
Pocket 20 is reinforced by a metal covering 26, bent intermediate its ends along line 28, and fastened along its edges, by any suitable means to leather strip 12. The fasteners connecting metal covering 26 to the leather strip also bind the edges of the strip together.
As shown in FIGURE 2, cutting edge 24 of chisel blade 22 is completely surrounded by soft leather, as the end of pocket 20 is rendered rigid by metal covering 26. This maintains the edge 24 in sharp condition, as Well as housing the edge to prevent it from being nicked.
In order to preclude inadvertent removal of blade 22 ice from pocket 20, surface 18 of leather strip 12 has a longer length than surface 16. The longer portion 30 of surface 18 mounts a clip structure 32 adapted to overly and clamp the edges of chisel blade 22 to surface 18.
Clip structure 32 includes a planar spring metal plate 34 positioned beneath longer portion 30 of surface 18. Opposite ends of plate 34 are rolled into tubular clips 36 and 38 received within slots 40 and 42 cut in the longer portion 30 of surface 18. Slots 40 and 42 aid in mounting and retaining clip structure 32 on longer portion 30.
Each of the resilient tubular clips 36 and 38 are adapted to overly and clamp one of the edges of chisel blade 22 to surface 18 as shown in FIGURES l and 3. With the clips in clamping relation, sliding movement of blade 22 is precluded. In order to remove blade 22, either clip is grasped with the thumb of one hand and rotated away from the edge of the blade, until it no longer engages the edge. The blade is then slid out of pocket 20 using the other hand. To reposition the blade Within pocket 20, clip structure 32 and longer portion 30 are dropped out of the plane of surface 18, and blade 22 is reinserted in pockett 20. Tubular clips 36 and 38 are then snapped over the edges of blade 22 into clamping engagement.
While a specific embodiment of my invention has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A scabbard for a chisel or the like comprising a pocket for receiving the blade of said chisel in sliding engagement, and resilient clip means for clamping the edges of said chisel in said pocket, said clip means comprising a substantially planar plate beneath said pocket having opposite edges rolled to form tubular clips adapted to extend over the edges of the chisel blade positioned within said pocket.
2. A scabbard in accordance with claim 1 wherein said plate is formed from spring metal.
3. A scabbard for a chisel or the like comprising a strip of flexible sheet material folded intermediate its length to provide complemental facing, spaced surfaces forming a pocket for receiving the blade of said chisel in sliding engagement, one of said surfaces being longer in length than the other, and a resilient metal plate beneath the longer portion of said longer surface, said plate having its opposite edges rolled into tubular form and overlying the longer portion of said longer surface for clamping the edges of the chisel blade received within said pocket to said longer surface.
4. A scabbard in accordance with claim 3 wherein said flexible sheet material is leather and is reinforced by a metal covering.
5. A scabbard in accordance with claim 3 wherein the longer portion of said longer surface includes a pair of spaced slots for receiving the edges of said metal plate.
