Description

Feb. 18, 1969 H. D. BURDETT TRASH CAN CONTAINER Filed Feb. 20, 19a? INVENTOR. M42040 0. 5090577 az'fozm United States Patent 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A trash can container having an L-shaped tilting door to support the trash can and to facilitate easy handling in removing and dumping the trash including a closure cover through which the trash is deposited.
This invention pertains to improvements in trash and garbage can containers and particularly to outside storage and trash pickup facilities for such trash cans.
Background of the invention (1) The field of this invention lies in trash handling apparatus, and is particularly directed to a trash can container.
(2) Heretofore, trash can containers were defective because of diificulties of lifting the can out of the wheeled carrier, Further, the former devices were not truly odorless because they were not totally enclosed.
Most former devices were highly complicated and subject to mechanical failure. The prior devices were dangerous to operate because of the scissors action of the operating lid tending to allow children to get their fingers caught in the door.
Prior devices were defective and became inoperative in bad weather, particularly during snow and freezing conditions.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a trash can container for outside use which is clean and sanitary.
Still another object is to provide a trash can receptacle that is convenient and safe to operate and maintain.
It is also an object to provide a trash can service container which is easy and economical to manufacture and sell and place in operation.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of trash can container incorporating the features of this invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the trash can supporting gate of the unit shown in FIG. 1.
FIG 3 is a front elevation of a modification of the trash can container shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
FIG. 4 is a left hand side elevation of the trash can container of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in FIGS. 3 and 4.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention there is shown a trash can container comprising a housing cabinet and a trash can carrying gate unit 11 hinged Within the cabinet 10. The cabinet consists of a floor 12 with integral upstanding sides 13 and 14 and a back 15 to the top edges of which is supportedthe rearwardly downwardly sloping top 16. A suitable hinged access door 17 is hinged at 18 to the forward edge 19 of the access opening 20 of the top 16 and a suitable lifting handle 21 ice is provided on the rearward top portion of the access door 17. i
The trash can support member comprises a gate 11 to the bottom of which is fixed can supporting floor 23 by suitable spaced L-shaped support members 24 which are fulcrumed on the gate trunnion pins 25 carried in the sides 13 and 14 of the cabinet 10. Around the side and top edges 26 of the gate 22 is provided a feathered pliable edge to seal the gate against the housing inside wall and top walls for cold climate use.
In the modification of FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, the trash can container unit comprises a bottom 27, sides 28 and 29, and a back 30 all connected to the bottom 27. A trash can carrying gate 31 has an integral floor member 32 supporting the trash can 33, the gate being hinged on the trunnions 34 carried in the sides 28 and 29 as in the FIGS. 1 and 2 arrangement. The gate 31 has a flange edge 35 aligned with the outside faces of the sides and top and closes against the front faces 36 of these sides and top, with a suitable pull handle 37 for manipulating the gate 31. If desired, suitable ground wheels 38 may be provided on the bottom 27 for easy portability of the unit.
An arcuate access cover 39 is hinged at 40 at the top edge of the front corners of the sides 28 and 29 and has a suitable lifting handle 41 fixed at its rear edge for removal of the trash can 33 for dumping.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the sprit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appendant claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A totally enclosed odorless safety trash can container comprising in combination:
(A) a housing cabinet,
(B) a trash can carrying gate unit hinged to swing within the housing cabinet,
(C) the cabinet being formed by a floor having upstanding integral sides and a back,
(D) a rearwardly downwardly sloping top formed integral with the top edges of the sides and back having an access opening,
(E) a hinged access door operatively positioned in the access opening and hinged to the forward edge of the access opening,
(F) a lifting handle fixed to the rearward top portion of the access door,
(G) the trash can carrying gate unit includes a can supporting floor formed integral with and extending rearwardly of the bottom edge of the gate,
(H) trunnion pins demountably supported in the front lower portions of the sides of the cabinet movable into trunnion receiving pivot bores in the forward portion of the trash can carrying supporting floor,
(I) a manipulating handle fixed to the outer face of the trash can carrying gate adjacent the upper edge thereof,
(J) and a feathered pliable edge on the sides and top of the gate to slidingly engage the inside surfaces of the top and sides of the cabinet to form a'totally enclosed sealed odorless cabinet for the trash can.
2. A trash can container as in claim 1 wherein the width 1,281,587 10/1918 Kovachevich 23243.2 of the pliable sealing edge is greater than the thickness of 2,386,929 10/1945 Brown 232-43.2 the hand of the user to prevent pinching and all injury to 2,719,071 9/1955 Wheeler 312-327 the user of the container. 3,065,858 11/ 1962 Furr 21l84 References Cited 5 FRANCIS K.
