Description

J. S. WHITEHILL.
Running-Gear.
No 34.278 v Patented. Jan '28; 1862.

MPETERS. PHoTcS-LFFHGGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. n c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. VVHITEHILL, OF WEST CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RUNNING-GEAR OF WAGONS'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,278, dated January 28, 1862.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN S. WHITEHILL, of West Chester, Chester county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Running-Gear oflVagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention is making the front and back hounds alike, so as to be connected by an adjustable coupling-pole and bolt, that the horses can be attached to either end of wagon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation as follows, to wit:
A represents the adjustable coupling-pole, to which the front and rear hounds B of axles C are attached by dropping the king-bolt D through the pole and the hounds B and circular iron plate E, the iron plate E being a support for the hounds; F, the tongue or shafts to which the horse or horses are attached.
The advantages of this invention are that in case the wagon is stopped in a hole or any obstacle the tongue is removed and attached to the opposite end and the wagon can be hauled 0r drawn in either direction, both hounds being alike, and therefore the Wagon can be thus immediately drawn in either direction or better managed by merely removing the tongue and king-bolt D and changing the king-bolt from the rear hound B to the aperture H of the front axle C, the king-bolt passing through the axle and pole, which thus holds, braces, and stiffens the rear end of carriage-gear.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable coupling-pole A, held by the king-bolt D passing through the rear end of hounds and circular plate E, all in combination, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN S. \VHITEHILL.
