WW1 E i D ATTORNEY United States Patent T 9 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pair of rectangular wire frame sides are vertically attached to a wall in a spaced relationship to support a rectangular front portion parallel to the wall. A tray is supported by hooks depending from the lower sides such that the tray is removable. A disposable refuse sack is held by the basket formed by the sides, the front portion, the wall and the tray.
Field of the invention This invention relates to refuse receptacles, and more particularly to a lightweight, easily assembled wastebasket which is securable to a wall.
The prior art Receptacles have heretofore been developed which retain a disposable sack in an upright open position for the reception of refuse and trash. It has been found advantageous to construct these refuse receptacles out of wire mesh in order to allow circulation of air to the refuse. A removable bottom tray is sometimes provided in the receptacle for receiving the bottom of the disposable sack and preventing leakage of liquid contained in the refuse. Such a refuse receptacle is described and disclosed in US. Patent 2,301,032, issued Nov. 3, 1942. However, the receptacle described in this patent is integrally constructed and therefore presents problems in storage and shipping thereof. Additionally, the bottom tray of such a receptacle is difficult to remove for cleaning, as it must be lifted upwardly out throught the mouth of the receptacle with an upstanding bail.
A need thus exists for a refuse receptacle which may be very compactly packaged in a disassembled state for economy of packaging, storing and shipping. The disassembled pieces must be easily assembled to provide a secure receptacle, and desirably are constructed from lightweight and inexpensive material. The receptacle should be attachable to a wall surface, such as the back of a pantry door, for easy access and in order not to take up an unnecessarily large amount of space. Additionally, the bottom tray portion of the refuse receptacle should be easily removable in a horizontal manner in order to facilitate cleaning without spilling of the collected refuse liquid.
Summary In accordance with the present invention, a pair of rectangular sides are each vertically attachable to a wall surface. A rectangular front portion is connectable with the edges of the sides such that the front portion is securely spaced from the wall surface in a parallel position. A tray is supported by a bottom portion of the sides to form a basket comprising the sides, the front portion and the wall surface.

Description 0 the preferred embodiment Referring to FIGURE 1, a wastebasket constructed in accordance with the present invention is designated generally by the numeral 10. A first wire frame side 12 includes a top bar 14a and .a bottom bar 15a rigidly connected by vertical bars 16a and 18a. The ends of the bars 14a and 15a includes bends 20a and 22a which terminate in hooks 24a and 26a. Hooks 24a and 26a define apertures for receiving fastening screws 28a and 30a in order that the wire frame side 12 may be securely fastened to a wall surface 32, which may be for instance the back of a pantry door. Similarly, a second side 13 includes top and bottom bars 14b and 15b which are connected by vertical bars 16b and 18b. Bends 20b and 22b terminate in hooks 24b and 26b, which receive screws 28b and 30b. The sides 12 and 13 may be slightly bent inwardlly during attachment to the wall surface 32 so that the hooks 24a-b and 26ab are securely tensioned against the screws 28a-b and 30a-b.
The other ends of the bars. 14a and 15a of the wire frame side .12 terminate in bend portions 34a and 36a, and in bend portions 38a and 40a, respectively. Each of the pairs of bend portions 34a and 38a, and 36a and 40a, form two oppositely facing hook mouths each adapted to receive one of two parallel bars 42a and 44a. Similarly, the hook mouths formed by bend portions 34b and 38b of side 13 are dimensioned to securely receive parallel bars 42b and 44b. The two bend portions 36a .and 40a also receive lower portions of the two parallel bars 42a and 44a, while the bend portions 36b and 40b receive lower portions of the parallel bars 42b and 44b. Bars 42a and 44a are rigidly connected to a pair of horizontal wire frame bars 46 and 48, which also connect the second pair of parallel spaced bars 42b and 44b. A pair of vertical bars 50 and 52 provide additional support to the front wire frame portion.
The lower end portions of vertical bars 16a and 18a as well as bars 16b and 18b, have horizontal supporting hooks 54a, 56a, 54b and 56b, respectively. These supporting hooks provide support to the bottom of a tray 60, which is constructed of sheet metal, plastic or the like. Tray 60 includes a side lip 62 which prevents liquid leakage from the tray. From an inspection of FIGURE 1, it will be seen that tray 60 is easily removable from the assembled wire frame, by merely horizontally sliding the tray outwardly under the bar 48 away from contact with the supporting hooks. Tray 60 is removed horizontally, thereby preventing spillage of accumulated refuse liquids.
A disposable sack 70 may thus be received in the refuse receptacle formed by the wire frame sides 12 and 13, the wire frame front portion, tray and the wall portion 32. The wire bars utilized in the construction of the wire frame portions of the receptacle may be covered with rubber or plastic coating, if desired.
The present invention comprises an easily assembled refuse receptacle which may be packaged in a very small space. For instance, the two wire frame sides 12 and 13, along with the wire frame front portion, may be disassembled and laid upon the tray 60 for compact packaging thereof.
FIGURES 2 and 3 illustrate the ease of assembly of the present receptacle before attachment of the receptacle to the wall 32. The side 12 is initially unattached to the front portion. The hook mouths formed by the bend portions 38a and 40a of the side 12 are then disposed about the innermost bar 42a of the pair of parallel bars. This position of assembly is shown by the solid lines in FIG- URE 2.
The side 12 is then rotated approximately 180 degrees about an axis passing through the innermost parallel bar 42a to the position shown by the dotted lines in FIG- URE 2. As best seen in FIGURE 3, the hook mouths formed by the bend portions 38a and 40a receive the innermost bar 42a in this assembled position, while the hook mouths formed by the bend portions 34a and 36a receive the outermost parallel bar 44a. The side 13 is assembled to the other edge of the front portion in the same manner.
In the assembled position, the present refuse receptacle provides a very sturdy, yet lightweight and inexpensivly manufactured refuse receptacle. The reticulated sides of the receptacle allow air to pass easily to the disposable sack 70 contained by the receptacle. Any leakage from the disposable sack 70 is caught by the tray 60, which may then be quickly and easily removed and cleaned.
Whereas the present invention has been described in conjunction with a preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that other modifications and changes will be suggested to those skilled in the art, and such modifications and changes are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a basket assembly wherein panels are to be detachably secured, the combination comprising:
a pair of hook-like members spaced apart on a side of a panel, each of said hook-like members having a first bend portion connected to an integral second bend portion to form two hook mouths opening in opposite directions,
a pair of parallel bars formed along the edge of another panel and spaced such that one of said bars may be received in a hook mouth of each said hook-like member and then the panels rotated relative to each other so that both said bars are securely received by said hook mouths.
2. The basket assembly of claim 1 wherein the outermost hook mouth of each said hook-like members receives the innermost parallel bar, and
said panels being rotated relative to each other about an axis passing through said innermost parallel bar.
3. A basket seourable to a wall surface for receiving a disposable sack comprising:
(a) a pair of rectangular side members each having downward extensions terminating in inwardly extending portions and each having means for vertical attachment to the wall surface,
(b) a rectangular front member,
(c) detachable connection structure for said side and front members including hook-like members having first and second bend portions to form two adjacent hook mouths opening in opposite directions and bar means receivable by each of said hook mouths so as to rigidly support said front member apart from and parallel to the wall surface, and
(d) tray means supported by said inwardly extending portions to form with said side members, front member and the wall surface a basket for receiving the disposable sack.
5 4. The basket of claim 3 wherein said side and front members are reticulated and are constructed of rigid wirelike members.
5. The basket of claim 3 wherein said tray comprises a fiat generally rectangular sheet of material having a raised flange about the periphery thereof.
6. A waste basket assembly comprising:
(a) a pair of side members defining apertures for receiving fasteners for vertical attachment to a wall surface,
(b) a front member having means on opposite sides thereof connected with edges of said side members such that said front member is spaced apart from and parallel to the wall surface,
(0) at least two of said members having downward extensions terminating in inwardly extending portions, one of said members extending downwardly to a level above said downward extensions, and
(d) a tray supported by said inwardly extending portions so as to be removable and insertable under the bottom of said one of said members.
7. The basket of claim 6 wherein said side and front members are reticulated and are constructed of rigid wirelike members.
8. The basket of claim 6 wherein said tray comprises a substantially flat, rectangular sheet of material having a raised flange about the periphery thereof.
9. The basket of claim 6 and further comprising:
(a) hook-like members extending from the edges of one of said side and front members, each said hook-like member having a first bend portion and a second bend portion to form two adjacent hook mouths opening in opposite directions, and
(b) bars on the other of said side and front members receivable by each of said hook mouths.
