UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HIMES, OF BRACKET, TEXAS.
BILLIARD-TABLE LEVELER.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,481, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed January 26, 1886. Serial No. 189,831.
To all whom. it may concern/ Be it known that I, FRANK HIMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bracket, in the county of Kinney andState of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Billiard-Table Levelers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to thev accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in billiard-table levelers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 isa similar View taken on a plane at right angles to Fig. l.
A represents'a cylindrical case, which is inserted in an opening made in the lower end ofthe billiard-table leg. This cylinder is closed at its lower end, and has a plate, B, located at about its center, the said plate being secured in the cylinder by means of screws or pins C.
D represents a vertical shaft, which has its lower end stepped in a recess made centrally in the lower end of the cylinder, and the said shaft passes through a vertical central opening in the plate B and is journaled therein. To the shaft below the plate B is secured a miter gear-wheel, E, and the upper portion of the shaft is screw-threaded, as at d, and passes through a follower, F, that fits in the upper end ol" the cylinder.
G represents a horizontal shaft that is journaled in a sleeve, a', which projects from one side of the cylinder. The inner end of the shaft G has a miter gear-wheel, H, which meshes with the wheel E,and the outer end of the said shaft is squared, as at g, to receive a key or crank, I, by means of which the shaft G can be rotated, thereby rotating the shaft D, as will be very readily understood.
Vertical guide-rods K project from the bot- (No model.)
tom of the cylinder and pass through openings made in the plate B and in the follower, so as to guide the follower and prevent it from turning, thereby enabling it to be raised 'or lowered above the upper end of the cylinder when the shaft G is turned.
One of these devices is placed under each leg of a billiardtable, and they thereby permit the table to be very readily leveled.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. In a billiard-table leveler, the combination of the vertical case having the closed bottom, the open upper end, and provided with the removable plate B, the vertical guiderods K, extending through openings in the plate B, the follower Fin the upper end of the case and having openings to receive the guiderods, and provided with an interiorly-threaded opening, the vertical shaft D, having ils lower end stepped in the bottom of the case and journaled in the plate B, the said shaft having the miter-pinion E, and the threaded upper end working in the threaded opening of the follower, and the horizontal shaft G, journaled in a sleeve on one side of the case, and having a miter-pinion, H, on its inner end, meshing with the pinion E, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. 'The casing having the vertical guide-rods K and the removable plate B, in combination with the follower having openings to receive the guiderods, the vertical shaft D, journaled in the plate B, and having the threaded end workingin athreaded opening in the follower, the pinion E 011 the said shaft, and the trans verse shaft G, having the pinion H, meshing with pinion E, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HIMES. lVitnesses:
R. KRATZ COALLY, F. R. MCALPIN.
