UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.

l DEOEASED.
KEY-HOLE GUARD.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341.388, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed June 20, 1885. Serial No. 169,314. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that CARL Proa, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Key- Hole Guards; and I, MARIA FIOR, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, administratrix of the estate of the said CARL FIOR, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in- IO Vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to .produce a key-hole guard designed to be used principally on padlocks; and it consists in the novel devices and combinations of devices described, and pointed out in the claim, and which will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of 2o this specification, and wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a padlock to which the invention has been applied. Fig.
2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 represents the key. Fig. 4 is an inside view of the lock with the front plate and bell removed. Fig. 5 is a view of the under side of the front plate. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a similar view on line 7 7 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indica-te like parts throughout the several figures.`
In said drawings, the letter A represents an ordinary padlock, having a hasp or bow, B, and pivotal locking bolt or 'tumbler O, which bolt' is secured in either the locked or unlocked position by the stop D and spring E,
or by other suitable means. A decoy keyhole, X, is placed in the front end of the lock, and is provided with an ordinary swing- .i0 ing guard.
An alarm mechanism may be placed inside the lock, so that when the key F is placed in the decoy key-hole X and turned therein a bell or other alarm will be sounded.
G is the proper keyhole, and it is screened by an ornamental device or shield, II. .This shield H is secured to the front plate of the lock, so as to be swung back and forth over the key-hole G, by means of a pin or stud, to 5o which one end is secured, and which passes through the front plate. Immediately below the under surface of this plate is a short arm, which is secured to the inside end of this pin or stud, which arm has a spring, I, pressing against it, which causes said shield, through the arm and stud, to assume the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1, and thus expose the key-hole G to view. The shield II, when moved downward or against the pressure of the spring I, is held in the position illustrated iudotted lines in said Fig. 1, concealing the key-hole G, by means of a hook or catch, J, while a stop, K, limits the downward movement of the shield. The hook or catch J projects through the front plate and engages the under side of the shield H, which is notched or cut away for the purpose, as shown in Fig. 6, and the spring L presses on the hook J and tends to hold the shield in the locked position.
Inside the lock a lever, M, is pivoted in such a position that the hook or catch J may be secured thereto, or preferably made integral with one arm thereof, as shown, and so that the spring L may tend to press one end of the lever away from the side or lock plate, to which the shield is pivoted. A movable rod or pin, N, rests on this end of the lever M, and has a reduced. portion at its other end, which projects through a small opening in the rear plate of the lock, as shown in Fig. 7. This reduced portion of the pin N should be very neatly fitted to the opening. Ou the rear face of the lock small round disks or ornaments are cast, having a small circular mark or groove out ou them to correspond with the diameter of the reduced portion of the pin N, which is made to pass through one of said disks.
A pin or projection, Z, is provided on the key F, so as to readily open the keyhole G by pressing on the piu N. Y
In operation the lock is fastened, in the usual manner, by inserting the key F in the key-hole G. The shield H is then brought down over the key-hole G, and held in place by the stop K and hook J. To open the lock, the point Z of the key F is pressed against the end of the pin N, thereby withdrawing the hook J against the spring L, when, by
