COAL-FILLING AND GAS-CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR MAGAZINE-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,360, dated May 1836- Application filed February 27, 1886. Serial No. 193,540.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. THOMAS, of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Filling and Gas-Controlling Devices for Magazine-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improved coal-filling device for the magazines of boilers, furnaces, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the magazine may be filled from the side of the boiler or furnace, thus obviating the necessity of very much space be tween the top of the boiler and the ceiling or roof of the room in which it is placed.
In the old form of magazine boilers and furnaces, where the coal is filled in directly to the magazine through the top opening thereof, the escape of gas when putting in coal is quite material and is very objectionable; and another object of the invention is to prevent the escape of this gas by providing means for its escape to the chimney when the door for the admission of coal to the magazine is open.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional View of a portion of a magazineboiler with my improvements, also in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the supplemental feeder with the door closed, the position of the door when open being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan View.
In the drawings, A represents the upper portion of amagazine-boiler in section, B representing the ordinary magazine in the center thereof. A flanged ring fastened air-tight to top of boiler encircles the top of the opening of the magazine, having an annular opening in the center, and this serves to support one end of the supplemental chamber 0, the said chamber being bolted to the said ring. The front end of this chamber is supported upon suitable fire-brick or. metal blocking, as shown at a, from the edge of the bricks. The supplemental chamber has an opening corresponding to the opening of the ring, and through this opening the fuel is admitted to the magazine. The sides and top ofthe supplemental magazine are curved, as shown; but they may be made in any suitable shape. Upon the front of the chamber, which is preferably longer (No model.)
than the rear, is hinged a door, D, which fits snugly over the front end of the chamber, making an airtightjoint, so as to prevent the escape of any gas at this point. To the upper end of the door a projection, N, is formed, which limits the upward movement of the door, as shown in Fig. 2. To the front of the chamber, at the lower part thereof and upon the outside, upon suitable pins,f, is hinged a hopper, E, which is inclined upward from the lower edge of the floor c of the chamber,
and has flanges on three sides,which prevent the coal from falling out.
The door D is arranged in an inclined position, as shown, and its lower edge is straight, so that it fits closely at the bottom on the floor of the chute E. The chute is hinged at the upper part, so that it may be tilted to allow any of the coal which happens to remain in to be discharged between the inner end of the chute and the opening of the chamber, thus keeping the chute at this point always free from coal or dust, and insuring at all times a complete closing of the door D. A staple, e,
or hook or eyebolt, is secured to the top of the chamber, and the rod M, with a hooked end, extends from this staple to the front, and is adapted to be hooked into the eyebolt f on the lower front face of the door to hold the same open, the stop M, as before intimated, limiting the upward movement of the door.
In the operation of the device the door is opened, and coal is placed in the hopper E and pushed into the chamber 0 to the opening in the rear thereof, which discharges it into the magazine of the boiler. When sufficient coal has been fed in, the hook N is ,removed from Y ing to the chimney. A valve, 9, is located inthe flanged opening from the chamber to the pipe, and this valve has a fixed stud projecting to the outside 9, to which an arm, 71, is secured. (Shown in Fig. 2.) From the arm It extends a rod, i, and a pin, k, projecting from the edge of the door I), and as the door D is opened the arm it will be drawn upon by the rod 6 and the valveg opened, and the gas generated will be drawn through the open valve to the chimney. \Vhen the door D is closed again, the rod a will cause the damper g to also close; and in order that gas will not accumulate in the chamber 0, Ihave formed the valve 9 a little smaller than the opening in the pipe in which it is located, so that whatever gas is formed will be drawn at all times through the opening thus made into the chimnev.
I prefer to arrange the door inclined, as shown, so that in case a great quantity of gas was generated from any cause whatever no explosion would follow, because the doorD could be forced open by the pressure from within.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the magazine of a boiler or furnace, of the chamber for feeding coal thereto, extending from said magazine to one side, ahingcd door at the front end thereof, and a hopper hinged at its upper end to the said chamber, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination, the eoal-magazine, a supplemental feeding-chamber consisting of the chamber 0, having a hinged door, a pivoted hopper upon the end-of the chamber, and an escape-pipe at the rear of the chamber connected to the chimney, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the coal-magazine, a supplemental filling device consisting of the chamber 0, having a hinged door upon its front end, an escape-pipe at its rear end, a valve contained in said pipe, and connections between said valve and the hinged door, whereby the said valve is opened upon the opening of the door and closed upon the closing of the door, substantially as described.
4. In combination with the coal-magazine, a supplemental feeding device consisting of the chamber 0, a hinged door having a stop, M, adapted to limit its movement, a rod, N, adapted to hold the door open, a valve, g, in the escape pipe leading to the chimney, and connections between said valve and the door, substantially as described.
