PATENT OFFICE.
AND SI-IILLER FOGLESON,
lCE-CREEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,265, dated May 4,1886.
Application filed February .36, 1886.
T 0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. MoMUR- RAY, CHARLES H. ,TERPANY, and SHILLER FOGLEsON, all residents of Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Creepers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ofthis specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved ice-creeper. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the metallic plate detached; and Fi 3 is a sectional view showing a modified const ruction of our improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to so-called icecreepers, adapted to be attached to boots or shoes for the purpose of preventing the wearer from slipping on the ice; and it consists in the improved construction ot'a device of that class, as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
In the present illustration of our invention we have shown it attached to and forming part of an elastic heel cap adapted to be slipped over the heel of a boot or shoe; but, if desired, the device may be attached to the heel part of a pair of rubbers.
The device proper consists of a triangular plate, A, each corner of which is provided with an upwardly-projecting stud, B. This plate is fastened to the under side of the heelcap 0 by means of rivets D; or, if desired, instead of using rivets, the plate may be cutout to form triangular teeth E, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, which, being bent at right angles to the body of the plate, pierce the bottom of the heel-cap and are clinched on the inside of the same, as will be seen more clearly by reference to Fig. of the drawings. By this construction of the plate we dispense with the use of rivets, and attach the plate to the heel-cap in such a manner that it cannot possibly become detached therefrom.
Instead of fastening the plate on the under I Serial No. 193,296. (No model.)
side of the heel-cap, as shown in Fig. 1, it may 3 of the drawings, from which it will be seen that the plate A is embedded between the layers forming the heel portion of the cap 0, with the teeth or studs 13 projecting through the bottom layer.
As stated at the outset of this specification, it is obvious that, instead of attaching the plate to a heel-cap, as shown in the drawings, it may be made a part of a complete rubber without departing from the spirit of our inveution.
W'e are aware that ice-creepers have heretofore been formed of metal plates with spurs riveted thereto; others of metal plates with spurs struck therefrom to project from one or both faces thereof, and that similar devices have been placed with their plates between the layers of sandal-soles, and we do not claim such construction, broadly; but
\Ve claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl.- The within-describedice-creeper, consisting of a triangular metallic plate, a downwardly-projecting spur riveted in each angle thereof, and near each spur a pointed securer struck up from said plate and facing toward the center thereof, substantially as described and set forth.
2. The combination of an elastic heelsandal and a triangular metallic plate having a spur riveted in each angle and projecting through the lower layer of the heel of said sandal, and having a pointed securer struck up from said plate near each spur and projecting through the upper layer of said heel, said securers being clinched down toward the center of said plate, substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. MCMURRAY. CHARLES H. TERPANY. SHILLER FOGLESON. \Vitnesses:
J. K. REDD, J OHN F. LEFFLER.
