MANUFACTURE OF TUBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,019, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed August 14, 1885. Serial No. 174,402. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, VILLIAM KENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in 'the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manufacture of Tubes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in making headers for water-tube boilers, and has for its object to form a header from a sheet of metal without anyintermediate process of drawing; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar method of shaping and welding the header, hereinafter fully described, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may under stand it more fully, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a suitable device for forming the headers previous to the welding or brazing; Fig. 2, a central section at the line x :v of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a similar section of the lower 'portion of the device with the header bent into the desired form; Fig. 4, a similar section showing the presser for more perfectly setting the overlapping end of the,
header; Fig. 5, a section at the line y y of Fig. 6, showing an anvil and furnace within the header 5 and Fig. 6, a front elevation ofthe same.

A is a female die, and B a male die, supported in a suitable frame by screws C.
Dis a clamp-bar, adjustably attached to the bottoni of the die B by means'of bolts aand nuts a.
E is a sheet'metal blank from which the header is formed, and it is placed between the upper die, B, and bar D, and then clamped thereto by manipulating the nuts a.
F are slide-blocks held on the upper face of the female die by the screws G. rIhese blocks are beveled outwardly from the bottoni and assist in bending the blank. By applying power to the screws C the male die is forced down within the female die, which will cause the blank to take a -1 shape. Then, by means of the screws G, first one and then the other of the blocks F are forced against the protruding ends of the blank, thereby bending said ends down so as to overlap each other, as seen in Fig. 3.
H is a presser, operated by a screw, I, running in the frame. The object of this presser is to more perfectly bend and set the over lapping ends of the header, and this is accomplished by forcing it down against said ends, as shown in Fig. 4.
After the required shape has been given to the header by any suitable operation, as above described, said header is lifted out of the female die and taken off from the male die, and
is now ready for the process of welding or brazing.
In Figs. 5 and 6, J represents an anvil supported upon pillars K. The shaped header is placed around the anvil and supported by the blocks Il, so as not to rest on said anvil, but leave suflicient space above the latter for the ready introduction of a furnace within the header. A very simple and convenient furnace is one in which oxygen and hydrogen are supplied as gases of combustion, and I have shown such a furnace at M. W'hen the temperature of the overlapping ends of the header has reached the welding or brazing heat, the furnace is withdrawn and the blocks L are removed, thus allowing the ends to rest on the anvil in readiness for the welding or brazing. If desired, a similarfurnace to that placed inside the header may be used on the outside of the same.
I do not wish to be confined to the particular means above described for making and completing a header, as many ways can be devised for operating the dies and the welding or brazing furnaces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
