SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,424, dated April 20, 1886. Application filed February 11, 1886. Serial No. 191,589. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. COVERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and [do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to sliding and swinging gates; and it consistsin the improvements hereinafter fully described'and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming specification,'Figure 1 is a perot'agate embodying myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view' of the gate-supporting frame, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the gate-fastening device.
To the gate-post A, located on one side of are secured two pint-les,a,which are engaged by the hinged loops on the standard B of the gate-supporting frame. The said swinging frame consists, in addition to said outer end of which is connected wit-h thelower end.of the standard B by means of an inclined bar, D. Short horizontal spindles b 0 project from the side of the bar C,near the inner and outer ends thereof, and upon each of said spindles is mounted a friction-roller. d, the outer ends of each of said spindles being flattened and vertically perforated for the passage of a securing'pin. e. which prevents the displacement of the friction-roller thereon. The standard B is provided near its lower end with a pintle, f, upon which is located the horizontal friction-roller g.
The gate proper has its two upper horizontal rails, h h, so arranged and disposed that the friction-rollers of the spindle d are located between the same, so that the gate can be moved upon said friction-rollers. The post E,on the opposite side of the roadway, is recessed, as indicated at j, which recess is spanned by a vertical bar, to be engaged by a catch, F, on the gate, the said catch consisting of two bent springs, Z m, which are arranged, as shown most. clearly in Fig. 3, so that when the gate is slid in the direction of the post E the rodJc will force the parts of the contracted spring Z m apart, and the gate be firmly held against lateral displacement.
In order to properly hold the gate upon the upper friction-rollers, two vertical plates, a 0, are employed, each of which is perforated at its center for the passage of the end of one of the spindles b c, after which the pine is inserted, thereby securely locking the gate in position upon the swinging frame.
The operation of the improved gate will be readily apprehended. The gate may he slid' to a sufficient distance,so as to only open part of the gateway, thereby obviating any necessity for swinging the gate; but when it is desired to open the entire gateway it will only be necessary to move the gate sufficiently to disconnect the catch F from the rod k, after which the entire gate may be swung upon the gate-supporting frame.
It will be obvious that the arrangement of parts in the described improvement are Sllllple, cheap, and durable;
I claim- The combination, in a sliding and swinging gate, of a hinged gate-supporting frame consisting of the standard B, bar 0, an inclined bar, D, friction-rollers located on the bar 0, thereon and provided with bent springs l m, and post E, having vertical bar is, substantially as set forth.
