Description

UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
ALFRED B. REEVES, OF COLUMBUS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO REEVES & OO., OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,242, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed January 18, 1886. Serial No. 188,860. (No model.)
To all whom. t may concern:
Beit known that I, ALFRED B. Rnnvnsa citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to au improved gage for `plows, of that class which consists of a curved runner hinged at one end to the plow-beam and having the opposite end vertically adjustable relatively thereto, to determine the depth of cut of' the shovels of a double shovel plow or like implement.
The objects of my improvement are to provide a gage of the classdescribed which shall be light and at thesame time sufliciently rigid in its construction to successfully resist the dragging thrust to which such device is neczo essai-ily subjected, and which may be easily and quickly attached to or detached from the ploW-bea1n.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention.
The igureisaperspective view ofa doubleshovel plow with my improved gage.
The gage is formed ot' a light fiat bar ot' iron bent a quarter-turn, so as to `form the runner a, in the upper end of which is formed an eye, b. Said runner is stiffened to resist a dragging thrust in the direction of its length by a brace, c, formed also ot' alight dat bar twisted at the ends, so that the wide surfaces of said ends lie in planes parallel, respectively, with the flat surface of the upper and lower ends of runner a, while the middle or principal portion ofthe brace presents its wider portion in a plane at right angles to said surfaces. The runner is attached to the plow-beam, so as to swing in a vertical plane, by means of a staple, 4C s, passing through eye b and having its ends secured in the plow-beam.
For the purpose of adjusting the horizontal portions of runner a vertically in relation to the points oftheplow-shovelse andf,a straight flat bar, It, having a series of holes, i. is pivoted at one end to the brace c atj,and its free end passes upward through a mortise, m, in the plow-beam. A pin, n, passed through one of the series of holes i, determines therelative 5o position of the shovels and runnera, the plowbeam resting on said pin andthe shovels when atwork projecting more or less below the runner. Then not at work the ruimer is adj usted so as'to be onv a line with or slightly below the 55 points of the shovels, and it then forms aconvenient support for the plow when moving from place to place.
I claim as my iuventionr The above-described plow-gage consisting of 6o the runner a, having eye b, staple s, brace c, adjusting-bar h, and pin a, all constructed in the manner described, and arranged to cooperate with a plow-beam, as and for the purpose specified.
