Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. RoEDEu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and uset'ul Improvements in Torsional Pi v tit-Balances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class ot'balances in which elastic supports are employed for the pivotal bearings ot the scalebeams acting torsionally; and it consistsiu abalance combining with the principle of torsional resistance tor such bearings that of tensile resistance, in such relation that both resistances coact to produce the desired result. This may be accomplished by substituting for the ordinary pivot,in which the material is disposed concentrically with the axis of torsion, pivots in which the material is disposed ecccntrically thereto in a common plaueas, for example, a flat band or ribbon either homogeneous or composed of duplicate wires or strips arranged in a common plane, preferably at right angles or edge wise to the beam.
My invention also contemplates certain improvements in details ot'construction, secu ring ready adjustability of the pivots to the beams, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
I have exhibited in the drawings, in illnstration of my invention, the application of the improvements to a doublebeam scale, such as ordinarily employed by druggists, grocers, &c.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the double'bcam scale, showing a pivot composed of two cylindrical wires or of strips arranged in a plane at right angles or edgewise to the beam; and Fig. 2 an enlarged detail of the adj usting-collars, and a homogeneous ribbon of metal or band employed as the pivot.
In the drawings, B B designate the scalebeams, which may be metallic bars ortubes, screw-threaded from one end to a point some what beyond the center, and similarly threaded from the other endt'or a short distance toward the center, as shown, for the reception and adjustment of th readed nuts or collars 0, between which the pivotal wires or band 20 are secured and adjusted in relation to the beams. The

There being one pivot for each beam, the two pivots are arranged in a common vertical plane in parallel lines spaced apart sufficicutly to accommodate the beams, and secured in vertical slits in the side posts. Where duplicated wires or strips are employed, asingle wire strip passed across and around the side supports two or more times will sutfice, being suitably stretchedin the process of securing. It homogeneous bands are used, they may be held by pins inserted from side to side through the slits of the posts, or otherwise held in any suitable manner. The beams .B are connected at the ends by frames consisting of vertical pieces I), held apart by diagonal struts 6, arranged substantially as described i'or the central frame, but constructed of lighter material, and provided with pivots, such as described. stretched across and retained between the end pieces, and united with the beams at or near the ends of the latter by collars or clamps c, as shown. The scale is provided with a central standard, A, united with the lower beam by means of bifurcated arms, and carrying the poisenveight 1), whose function in connterbalanciug the combined tensile and torsional resistance of the pivots is the same as where torsional resistance only is involved, and with supporting-standards (Z (Z for the scale-pans D rising from the terminal frames.
In Fig. 1 two ordinary cylindrical wires are shown as the pivotal supportot'each beam, and in Fig. 2 a homogeneous band or ribbon metal. It will be apparent that as the material ot the pivots is arranged eccentrically to the axis of torsion-that is, at the sides thereof in a common plane-in either case the deflection of the beam from the normally-horizontal position of rest involves both a. torsional and a tensile deflection of the pivots and consequent torsional and tensile resistances,
and that these coact in the ordinary operations of the scale. It will be also obvious that the feature of the adjustable collar may be used independently with the ordinary single cylindrical wire pivots of torsion-scales; also,
that other substances than metal may be used for the pivots, provided they possess the requisite qualities of elasticity and strength.
The band or its equivalent, herein described, may be used for the central beam support in connection with the ordinary single wire employed for the terminal pendants.
1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a torsional balance, a pivot the material of which is disposed at the sides of and approximately in a common plane with the axis of torsion, substantially as set forth.
2. A weighing-scale constructed with flat torsion strip or strips stretched horizontally and set up edgewise, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In torsional pivot-balances, a beam provided with adjustable collars arranged to clamp and secure the beam to the pivots, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
