SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,165, dated April 6, 1886.

Be it known that I, PETER T. GRAVES, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention, to be hereinafter distinctly claimed, relates to a stool 'provided with a foot-rest.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete stool. Fig. 2 is a section, with portions broken away, showing some of the interior parts.

In the stool shown in the drawings the legs a a a a are made of bent wood, the top ends being secured in a metal cap, Z), having sockets in its under side, into which the ends of the legs are fitted, and in which they are retained by means of screws passing through the top of the cap and screwed intothe ends of the legs. These legs diverge from each other downwardly, so that at the bottom the legs are far enough apart to cause the stool to stand firmly and to provide against its being too easily overturned. At a distance up from the lower ends of the legs a c a braceblock, c, is inserted between the legs, against which the legs bear, and which holds thelegs apart. Staying-rods d (I, each furnished with a head at one end and with a screw-thread and nut at the other end, are inserted horizontally through two opposite legs and through the intervening brace-block,0, whereby the braceblockis held imposition, and the legs are drawn toward each other and are held firmly in position against the block 0.

Heretofore in a work-stand a ring has been used to which the legs on each side were connected by short bolts, as shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 138,072, issued to O. S. Gaplc, April 22,1873, and in an officestool rods have been used for braces, as shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 275,384, issued to M. V. B. Howe on April 10,

About the legs, at a distance from the lower extremities, is the foot rest 6, supported at a distance from the legs on the bracketsff, the lower ends of which brackets are made rigid to the legs a.

Heretofore a foot-rest affixed directly to the legs has been used, as shown in the patent to Howe, above mentioned; but such a form of construction is not adapted for use with a stool built as mine is, having legs near together from near their top to near their lower extremities, for a rest so constructed and attached directly [0 the legs would be too small and too much obstructed by the legs for convenient use, and such a construction would not so well cover the ends of the staying-rods, nor be so ornatein appearance as the construc tion adopted in my stool. The seat 9 is provided on its under side with a rigid downwardly-projecting screw, h,which turns in a corresponding screwthrcad in an aperture in the center of the cap 1), whereby said seat is adjustable up or down.

I do not wish to confine my form of stool to those having only four legs, as a stool having the distinctive features of my invention may be constructed with three or any greater num ber of legs.

\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a stool, the combination of the legs a, the brace-block c, the outer edge of which is in contact with the legs, and the stayingrods d d, each of which rods passes through two legs, and through the intervening staying block, 0, substantially as described.

2. In a stool, the combination of the legs a, brackets ff, rigid on the legs a, and an encompassin g foot-rest, e, supported on the brackets at a distance from the logs, substantially as described.
