C. H. BUCHANAN.
HAND BAG. No. 338,475. Paten edMar. 23, 1886.
N. Pneus mwbuuwmpw. wurm-wm u c AN, a citizen of the United States, residing at UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
CHARLES H. BUCHANAN, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND- BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,475, dated March 23, 1886.
Application filed February 9, 1836.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs H. BUCHAN- Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specication.
My invention has for its object to provide a new form or construction of a cabas or handbag, permitting the use in a novel manner of a material not hitherto employed for the purpose. 4
My invention consists in the construction of a cabas or similar bag, composed mainly of imitation straw braid or equivalent material.
In carrying my invention into effect, I take imitation straw braid, which is a textile Inaterial composed of cotton or other fiber, the strands of which are braided or plaited in imitation of real straw braid. I take strips or lengths of this material and lay them alongside of and overlapping each other at their edges, andI secure them together by rows or lines of stitching passing through the overlapping edges, producing sheets of any required length and width. These sheets I apply to a metallic bag-frame, so asto cover the same onits sides, and also, it'desired, on its bottom and ends. A handle of any desired material and construction being provided and secured to the frame, and the cover being lined, if desired, the cabas or bag is complete.
Figure 1 is aside view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of the hand-bag representing myinvention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a bag embodying my invention. B represents the sides thereof, which are composed of strands or strips b, of imitation straw braid, having their edges b overlapl Serial No. 191,310, (No model.)
ping and secured by lines or rows of stitching b2.
G represents the bottom, and D the ends, of the cabas or bag, composed of the same material as the sides; or, if desired, such bottom and ends may be of leather or other material. Said sides, ends, and bottom are secured to a metallic frame, E, in any suitable manner, as by clamping or stitching, and a handle, F, of any suitable material, is secured to said frame.
In lien of imitation straw braid, real straw braid or other equivalent material may be employed as a component, in every case, how
ever, being arranged with overlapping edges l stitched together.
The advantages of the construction herein described are briefly as follows: It provides a neat, durable, and very ornamentalform of cabas or hand-bag, the design of which may be greatly varied, and it permits the utilization of a material not hitherto employed for the purpose.
V'Vhat I claim as my invention is as follows:
l. As an improved article of manufacture, a cabas or similar bag, the sides of which are composed of imitation straw braid or equivalent material in the form of strips or strands, whose edges overlap each other, and which are secured together by lines or rows of stitching, substantially as shown and described.
