SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,902, dated March 16,1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN R. IVARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainwell, county of Allegan, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Spring Bed- Bottom, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invent-ion is to construct certain improvements in that well-k now u class of coiled bed-springs known as double or twin springs.

In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sec tion of the bed-bottom; Fig. 2, top view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is'an enlarged perspective view of the twin-spring.

Referring to the letters marked on the drawings, B B are two parallel slats, secured to end block, D D, constituting an ordinary slat ted bottom for lying longitudinally in the bed. Such bed-bottoms are especially adapted for use with the twin springs a a. These springs are made from a single piece of wire, each terminal end of the wire at the lower end of the coil being secured to its respective slat B B in the common manner of supporting twin springs. The upper coils of the springs are bent out and turned under to form hooks c c on one side, and are bent or kinked on the opposite side to form the loops 6 6, into which the hooks c c are caught, as illustrated, the hooks of one spring hooking into the loops of the next spring. The connecting-bar between the loops 6 e is straight, thus preventing the springs from canting toward each other.

I am aware that twin springs have been heretofore constructed from a single piece of wire, having the cross-bar which connects the upper coils provided with hooks, instead of loops, as shown in the present case at e, such springs being illustrated, for instance, in United States Patent No. 285,331, September 18, 1888. In such construction the upper coil of each spring was not provided with the hook 0, nor with a kink or loop, but formed a regular circle in the ordinary manner, the disadvantage of this being that, when the twin springs are hooked together for use in a bed-bottom, the hooks, corresponding to the loops in this case, slip on the said upper coils of the springs, and thereby stretch and permanently distort them, causing the springbottom to become sagged below its normal position, and in a great degree to lose its clas ticity. In the present construction this slip- 5 ping action is prevented by the reason of the hooks c in the upper coil of thesprings which hook into the loops 0'. Thus, in my construction, the springs yield under the burden they bear in use without canting over and becom ing permanently stretched out of shape or partially uncoiled.

The end springs may be connected with the blocks D D by hooks rand staples, or in any ordinary manner. One of the end springs may be made with loops on both sides and no hooks, and the hooks 1' be caught in the loops on one side; or, if preferred, the hooks c of the springs may hook into loops fastened to the end block, D.

I prefer to make the bed-bottom in two sections and lay them side by side longitudinally in the bedstead; but this isa matter of choice, as I make no claim to bed-bottoms in sections, nor to parallel slatted sections for bedbottoms.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a bed-bottom having parallel slats for 8t supporting the springs, twin springs having the wire of the upper coils bent out and turned over to form hooks, the wire on the opposite side of the springs being bent to form loops at each end of the straight portion of wire which connects the upper coils of the Springs, substantially as set forth.
