UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM BURGESS DAVIS, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JUDSON WADE STEPHENS, OF SAME PLACE.
KITCHEN-BOILER CLEANER.
SLECI'EICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,748, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed Aprill, 1885. Serial No. 161,469.
- Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Boiler Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the boiler in central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section.
This invention has relation to means for removing the sediment from kitchen-boilers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim. In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an upright kitchen-boiler having the supply-pipe B.
C is the pipe leading to the Waterback, and I) the pipe leading from the same to the boiler.
E is a wash or discharge cock placed in a pipe leading from the bottom ofthe boiler.
Transversely arranged in the lower portion of the boiler is a stirrer or paddle, F, provided with the journals G and H, the latter being extended to pass through the bearing and stuffing-box in the side of the boiler. The stirring-paddle or flange portion or portions R are made in such form that the margins thereof will follow the curvature of the hot- 0 tom of the boiler and approximate the same closely. \Vhen the paddle is turned by means ofa crank or handle, L, applied on a keyseat, a, at the end of the extended journal H, the sediment which has accumulated at the 5 bottom of the boiler will be stirred up in the water and can then be readily drawn off by means of the dischargecock.
(No model.)
In order to provide a practical appliance for boilers of this character,it is essential that the bearings through which the journal H passes shall be carefully adapted to prevent drip. In order to accomplish this Ihave provided a plug-bearing, m, which is properly secured in the Wall of the boiler diametrically opposite the inner bearing, G. This plug is made with the shoulder b, and with a screwthread on the larger base portion 0, and a screw-thread on the smaller projecting portion d, which is made concave at the end, as indicated at e, to receive packing. The small gland g is screwed upon the threaded portion (1, and is provided with an opening, it, for the end of thejournal to which the crank is to be applied.
V is an external imperforate cup, which is applied to the stuffing-box when the device is not in use. It is provided with a wrenchseat, It, screwed tightly upon the threaded base portion 0 of the plug-bearing. It is turned down hard upon the base-shoulder b, and completely closes the bearing, so that there can be no drip. In order to apply the crank-handle this exterior cup must be re moved.
Having described this invention, what I 5 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the upright kitchenboiler, its transverse stirrer having a margin following the curvature of the bottom of the boiler, and the valved discharge-pipe, of the extended journal provided with a key-seat, the bearing-plug and gland, and the exterior drip-preventing cup, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BURGESS DAVIS.
