UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. AMMON, OF EAST LYNNE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO GEORGE W. FARROW AND GEORGE W. SWINEHART.
HAME ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337.649. dated March 9. 1886.
Application filed January 1 l, 1886. Serial No. 188,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I. JAMES W. AMMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Lynne, in the county of Cass and State of Mis- 5 souri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hame attachments, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and convenient device for adjusting the attachment to the hame of a harness, so that the draft on the hame may be changed so that one pair of hames may be used on any sized hor.;e and still have the draft come in the proper place.
These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of a portion of a hame with the device attached. Fig. 2
is a view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the groove in the hame with the plate removed.
Similar letters of reference indicatecorrespending parts in the several figures.
A is a common hame, and has a groove, a, cut in its front side and running lengthwise of the hame, for the purpose of receiving a plate, B. Said plate may be made of any suitable m'aterial, preferably of steel, and of any desired length and thickness, and is secured firmly in place by any suitable means, preferably by means of rivets b, passing through holes b in the plate and then through holes a in the hame, and by having their ends rivet- 40 ed. Plate B is provided with holes b, of any desired number. Said holes are preferably provided with screw-threads for engaging the screw-threads on the bolt d. Said bolt d is preferably made with an eye in one end, for
receiving a ring, F, and has threads cut on the other end.
B is a clasp, and may be made of any suitable material, preferably of steel, and is made with a hole, e, for allowing the bolt d to pass through for securing said clasp in place. The clasp may be made with a loop or eye, G. cast onto its back part, for receiving the chain or tug, but is preferably made with holesff for the ends f f of the loop or eye G to pass through, and when thus made the ends f f are riveted on the inside of clasp E. Said clasp E preferably extends around on the under side of the hame, so as to assist in holding it in place. 4
A suitable pad may be used to prevent the clasp from injuring the collar, said pad extending over the under side of the clasp and is secured to the clasp.
My invention is operated by placing the clasp over the outer edge of the hame, so that the hole 6 in the clasp will be directly over one of the holes I). Then the bolt d is passed through hole 6 of the plate E. and then the bolt is screwed into the plate B, so that the eye or head of bolt d will press down upon plate E, and thus hold it firmlyin place. Said clasp E may be raised or lowered, as desired, by unscrewing bolt d and then sliding the clasp up or down, as may be required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, w'itha clasp, E, having an eye, G, and provided with a hole, 6, of a hame provided with a plate, B, having holesf8o b, and a bolt, d, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose-set forth.
2. The combination, with a hame having a groove. a, of a plate, B, provided with holes b, a clasp, E, having an eye, G, and hole 6, and a bolt, d, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES AMMON.
