UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAMON W. BROOKWAY, or DOVER, MAINE.
VALlSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,367, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed December 10, 1885. Serial No. 185,299. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAMON W. BROOK- WAY, of Dover, in the county of Piscataquis and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Valises, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to extension-valises;.
and it consists in an improved construction of the handle thereof, and the means of securing the same to the cover of the valise, all as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings, and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an extension-valise embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal vertical section through a portion of the upper part of the cover.
In the drawings, A is the box portion of an extension-valise, made of such a size as to fit nicely within the cover portion B, to which are riveted the straps a b c, by which the portions A and B may be secured together, all in a well-known manner.
The portions A and B are constructed, in a well-known manner, of the pasteboard sides and top d d, and covered with a suitable textile fabric, e, which makes a light and convenient form of valise, the strength of which is sufijcient for all ordinary handling. These extension-valises have usually been provided with handles of leather, the ends of which are secured by thin strips of metal to metal rings, which in turn, are secured, by means of othertthin strips of metal, to the cover of the These metallic connections by constant wear give out easily and render the handle practically useless. This is very objectionable, and it is to overcome this objection that I provide the valises with the handle which is the subject of my present application, which, when once applied, will last as long as any part of the valise towh'ich it is applied.
The under side of the top of the cover B is provided with a strengthening-piece, g, of any suitable material, while immediately above this piece g, upon the upper side of the cover B, is placed a stay-piece, f, of leather, ,metal, or any other suitable material, which, as
line of the handle 0 when out in cross-see tion. The handle 0 is made from two flat pieces of leather, h h, or similar material, by stitching them together from a point near one end to a point near its opposite end; but said handle may be made of a single piece of leather with its ends split without altering the principles of my invention. The ends of said handle 0 are passed through the holes in the stay-pieces f and g, and the divided portions of the ends of said handle are turned down upon the strengthening-piece g in opposite directions, and securedin that position by the rivets i i, or by any other suitable fastening, which passes through the cover B and the leather or metal stay-piece f. The stay-piece f not only acts as a strengthening-piece, but also prevents the fraying of the textile fabric c and the breakage of the pasteboard shell d, which would almost invariably be the case if this were dispensed with. By this method a handle may be made which is readily applied, and which, when applied, is very strong and enduring.
The strengthening-pieceg may be dispensed with if the body of the valise is made of heavy board, as is sometimes the case, without afl'ecting the principle of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. In combination with the cover of an extension-valise having a covering, of textile fabric, a stay-piece of stout leather, metal, or-
in opposite directions after-having been passed through said rectangular holes, the whole being secured together by through and through fastenings,
v2. The combination, with the cover of a valise having a covering of textile fabric, of the stay-piece f, provided with two rectangular I I W,
holes, corresponding holes cut through the body of the cover. the strengthening-piece 9, also provided with corresponding holes, the handle having its ends inserted through said 5 holes, and each end separated into two parts, which parts are turned in opposite directions against the strengthening-piece g, and secured thereto and to the body of the vulise'cover by fastenings, which pass through the stay-piece [O f, the body of the cover, the strengthening piece and a portion of the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 4th day of Der5 cember, A. D. 1885.
