RIVET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,142, dated March 2, 1886.

Be it known that I, ELISHA FLAGG, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rivets; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement in rivets; and the invention consists in a rivet constructed as is hereinafter with particularity shown, described, and claimed.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my rivet; Fig. 2, a view, partly in section, of rivet with solid shank; Fig. 3, a sectional view showing 'rivet partly upset when employed for attaching a button to fabric; Fig. 4, asectional view showing rivet completely upset. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the rivet.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

The rivet which forms the subject 0? the invent-ion described herein is a rivet specially applicable as a fastening davice for attaching buttons to clothing, and for riveting shoes and garments of various kinds. A rivet adapted to these uses must possess strength, facility of application, and cheapness. To meet these requirements, I construct my rivet from any suitable metal and of any desired size.

The shank A of my rivet may be either tubular or solid, and it is provided at one end with a head, a, and at the other end with a point, b. From thispointed end downward either to or nearly to the head a the shank is divided into two or more sect-ions. It is essential, however, that thesesections converge, and so form the point b, for this point is of primary importance in my rivet.

Now, when my rivet is constructed substantially as above described, its application is as follows: Thesharpened end b of the shank is, without the aid of a needle or a previouslyformed hole, forced through the substance of the garment, shoe, leather, or whatever material, substance, or thing it is desired to apply it to. The head a is brought snugly against one side of the material, and then a button, B, or a washer with suitable perforation, is placed over the sharpened and protruding end I) of the rivet, suitable force (either that of a press or hammer) being then applied to this sharpened end. The result that follows is a swelling or folding outward of the several sections from the shank A, as shown in Fig. 3.

It is not to be understood that the folding outward is the ordinary turning back or clinching of the ends of the sections, forit is not. On the contrary, the sections swell out so as to form curved loops 0, so to speak,

and the sides of those loops by continued press ure are brought together, if desired, so that the sections are doubled,and so form clinches d, the entire series of sections so doubled over making,practically,a second head at the pointed end of thcrivet, notwithstanding the shank had been pointed to enable the shank of the rivet to be inserted, as stated. The rivetbeing in this way upset and the second head so formed, it is evident that it will retain between its two heads whatever may be between them, whether a button, washer, cloth, leather, or other thing or material.

It is obvious that the interposition of a but ton or a washer is not necessary to the proper working of the rivet,sinceit may be employed separate and apart from them.

Having now described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The within-described rivet,oonsisting of the head a and the shank A, composed of a series of sections converging to and forming the piercingpoint 12, whereby when the rivet is applied its sections are bulged outwardly from one another with the point between or in the midst of them, substantially as shown and described.
