Description

Feb. 20, 1968 RfG MARINO 3,369,835
' SHOVEL Filed Sept. 15, 1965 INVENTOR RINALDO G. MARINO United States Patent 3,369,835 SHOVEL Rinaldo G. Marine, Corona, N.Y., assignor of twenty percent to Leopold Kaplan, twenty percent to Robert M. Cavello, and ten percent to Robert C. Cummings, all of New York, N.Y.
Filed Sept. 13, 1965, Ser. No. 486,671 1 Claim. (Cl. 294-54) This invention relates to and has for its principal object the provision of an improved type of shovel.
In the removal of various types of material such as snow from sidewalks, road and other surfaces, a sticking of the snow to the surface of the blade is often encountered, particularly when the snow is in a melting condition.
Experience shows that it is mans natural propensity to remove the snow from the shovel by striking the front edge and particularly the corners thereof against the nearest available hard surface. Constant repetition of this action bends and curls the edges of the blade so that after a passage of time the shovel is rendered unfit for its primary purpose of gliding on the surface beneath the snow for easy removal thereof.
By the subject invention, the above problem is overcome by welding or otherwise securing a relatively small metal tab to a lateral edge of the blade of the shovel.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the drawing in which the sole figure is a pictorial view of the shovel of the invention.
As shown in the drawing, the shovel comprises a handle 12. and a blade 14; the blade having a concave cross-sectional configuration when viewed in a plane normal to the leading edge of said blade. The edge 16 of the blade 14 has firmly aflixed thereto an essentially blunt, small metal tab 18.
In use, when the material being shoveled sticks to the blade 14, the person doing the shoveling will strike the tab 18 against the nearest available hard surface, thereby removing any material sticking to the surface thereof, while at the same time maintaining the front edge 20' and corners 22 and 24 of the blade 14 in their original sharpened condition.
I claim:
1. In a shovel for removing material such as snow and the like having (a) a handle and (b) a blade, said handle attached to one side of said blade, said blade having a concave cross-sectional configuration when viewed in a plane normal to the leading edge of said blade, the improvement which comprises a laterally projecting essentially blunt metal tab securely aflixed to one of the lateral sides of said blade adjacent to the leading edge of said blade, said tab adapted to be struck with a sharp blow to thereby cause snow and the like adhering to said blade to be removed therefrom.
