UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEAN BAPTISTE DURAND, OF ST. CHAMOND, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO EDMUND AND JOSEPH WEIGHT, CHARLES S. HOWE, AND GEORGE T. MOXEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA., AND HARRIS FILSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RETAINER FOR UMBRELLAS.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,846, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed November 12, 1885. Serial No. 182,573. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN BAPTISTE DU- RAND, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in St. Ohamond, Loire, France, have invented Improvements in Retainers for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to providean adjustable non-elastic retaining-band for umxo brellas; and this object I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being has to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurelis a face view,on an enlarged scale,
of a retaining-band constructed in accordance 1 with my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 a View of an umbrella provided with my improved retainingband. The usual retainers, made of elastic tape or ribbon, for confining the folds of an umbrella are objectionable for the reason that theylose their elasticity after a short time or else become so much stretched by use that they will not properly perform their retaining duty, while an inelastic band or tape isvery seldom of the exact length to properly retain the folds of an umbrella, and is also open to the objection that it is liable to stretch somewhat.
My improved retaining band overcomes 0 this objection, being made of inelastic tape or ribbon capable of adjustment to suit different sizes of umbrellas and to properly retain the folds of the same.
The ribbon or tape F has at one end the usual button, B, and is provided with a ring, A, for adaptation to said button when the band is passed around the umbrella, but this ring, instead of being, as usual, secured to the end of the ribbon or tape opposite that which carries the button,is adapted to a loop of the ribbon, the end of the latter being secured to the central bar, a, of a buckle, b, which can be The retainer may be separate from the umbrella, if desired, but it is preferable to secure tothe umbrella that end of the ribbon F which carries the button B in the usual manner.
A hook or projection may replace the button, if desired, and an eye or loop adapted to such hook orprojection may be used in place of the ring A, these alternative devices being considered the equivalents of the button and ring.
I claim as my invention- The within-described retainer for the folds of umbrellas, said retainer consisting of a ribbon, F, combined with the ring A, button B, and sliding buckle b, all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. JEAN BAPTISTE DURAND.
