(No Model.) I
L. M. S. MILLER.
WASHING MACHINE.
No. 336,338. Patented Feb. 16, 1886.-
UNITE LEVI M. S. MILLER, OF FINDLAY, OHID.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,338, dated February 16, 1886. Application filed November 13, 1882. Serial No. 76,623. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEVI M. S. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to washing-machines.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates the suds-box, preferably rectangular in form, and having a double inclined bottom formed by the lapped boards B B, as shown. The front and rear walls, 0 O, of the suds-box A are parallel, slightly inclined, and enter grooves a in the end walls, D. An inclined guard-strip, E, is secured to the rear wall, 0, of the suds-box and projects inward and downward to prevent to a great extent the Water from splashing out during the operation of washing the clothes, no cover being required for the suds-box. wall, 0', is slightly higher than the front wall, to prevent any water that may accidentally be thrown upon the guard-strip from passing over the edge of the suds-box, the inclination of the guard-strip serving to carry the water back into the suds-box. The suds-box is supported on three legs, the short one, F, being located at the middle and front side of the box A and inclined outwardly from the bottom of the box, to which it is securely braced by a rib, G, and a brace-rod, H. The legs I I are secured to the ends of the suds-box near the, rear side, incline outwardly, and are provided in their upper ends with seats J to form bearings for the ends of the rubber-shaft K. The
The rear rubber consists of two downwardly-curved arms, L, the curve being toward the rear of the suds-box when the rubber is in place, secured to arms or levers M by rods N and the rubber-shaft K, which is passed through said arms and levers, as shown, and have projecting ends, which form the journals of the shaft K. A rod, K, also connects the front ends of the levers M. The curved arms L have grooves b in their inner faces, which are inclined in the direction of curves of said arms, and in said grooves 12 is secured the inclined rubber O. ThisrubberO is preferably of wood, made in one piece, and is provided with a series of perforations, a, made therethrough near the vertical edges of a series (four or more in nu niber) of steps, (I, made in the upper face of the rubber O and extending its entire length. The lower edge of the rubber O is rounded and projects slightly beyond the lower ends of the curved arms L, as shown, for the purpose of pressing the clothes against the rear wall of the box A. The suds-box is first partially filled with water and the clothes then placed upon the stepped face of the rubber and the levers operated by hand. Either course or fine fabrics may be washed by this machine, as the rubber turns and presses the clothes when the levers are operated, thereby thoroughly cleaning them.
Having described this invention, what I claim is- In. a washing-machine, the combination, with the suds-box A, provided with a bottom of lapping boards B B, of one median front outwardlyobliqued leg, F, ribbed at G, two outwardly-obliqned and longer rear legs, I I, and the brace-rod H, connecting said leg F with the under lapping board, B, whereby the sudsbox is supported, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I flffiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEVI M. S. MILLER.
