Description

(No Model.)
G. LONGBOTTOM;
DEVICE FO R SEOURING DOOR KNOBS TO THEIR SPINDLBS.
No. 335,824. Patented Feb.- 9, 1886.
' A A A l ll CHRISTOPHER LON GBOTTOM, OF BRADFORD, COUNTY OF YORK, ENGLAND.
DEVICE FOR SECURING DOOR-KNOBS TO THEIR SPINDLES.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,824, dated February 9, 1886.
Application filed June 4, 1885. Serial No. 167,612. (No model.) Patented in England January 22, 1885, No. 948, and in France May 26, 1885, No. 169,150.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER Lone- BOTTOM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Bradford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Door-Knobs to their Spindles, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in England, N o. 918, dated January 22, 1885, and in France, No. 169,150, dated May 26, 1885,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for securing doorknobs to their spindles, and will be fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings is an elevation of a pair of door-knobs being secured to the spindle by my improved devices. Fig. 2 is a section of such knob, showing also the end of the spindle. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the devices shown in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the escutcheon. Fig. 4. is a section of the rose with internal locking-flange. Fig. 5 is a section of the externally-flanged nut, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the knob with the projecting key cast or secured therein.
One of the knobs of a pair for instance, the knob Ais, by preference, permanently fixed to one end of the square spindle B. The corners or angles of the other end of the said spindle are cut with a screw-thread, on which the flanged nut O is screwed. The other knob, D, of the pair is made with a hole square in cross-section, to fit the spindle B, and from the face of this knob projects a key, E, of iron or steel, and cast in or otherwise secured to the mounting. The key E fits into a slot or keyway, F, formed in the flanged nut O, and the rose G is formed with an inner flange, H,which is also provided with a'keyway, J, correspond.
ing to the keyway F in the nut C, and through which the head of the key E is adapted to pass.
To secure the knob D to the spindle B when fitting the knobs to a door, the spindle B is passed through the door, and the rose G is then placed on it. The nut G is screwed on the spindle and adjusted to hold the rose against the door, and so that the slots or keyways F and J will register with each other. The knob D is then put on the spindleB so that the key E will pass into the keyways with the head of such key projecting beyond the flange H of the rose. The rose G is then turned about a half-revolution in either direction, thereby interlocking the flange H between the flange of the nut G and the head of the key E, and so fixing the knob to the spindle.
To prevent the rose being turned back to its orginal position and releasing the knob, I fix it to the door by screws.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The described devices for securing doorknobs to their spindles, which consists in the combination, with a square screw-threaded spindle and a doorknob provided with a key, E, and having an axial socket square in cross section, of the interiorly-threaded and flanged nut F, having a keyway in its flange, and a rose flanged interiorly, in which flange is formed a corresponding keyway, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER LON GBOTTOM. \Vitnesses:
SAMUEL A. DRAOUP, DAVID NowELL.
