w. D. DAVIS BATHROOM UTILITY HOLDER Filed April 29, 1966 6 T N 0 A N A 0 M M L M w BY W ATTORNEY Dec. 5, 1967 United States. Patent 3,356,429 BATHROOM UTILITY HOLDER William Dana Davis, 801 6th Ave.,
Helena, Mont. 59601 Filed Apr. 29, 1966, Ser. No. 546,320 3 Claims. (Cl. 31239) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bathroom utility holder for supporting a roll of toilet paper for use and in a substantially concealed position. A removable cover facilitates refilling the holder and additionally provides an ashtray and a support for a drinking glass and toothbrushes.
This invention relates to a holder of general utility for use in bathrooms and more particularly to a holder for containing a roll of toilet paper normally stored in a concealed position.
One object of the invention is to provide a holder having a removable cover to facilitate reloading the holder with a fresh toilet paper roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder wherein the cover functions as an ashtray and a holder for a drinking glass.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the utility holder;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, taken substantially along a line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially along a line 3-3 of FIGURE 1 and showing the holder in an applied position, and
FIGURE 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 44 of FIGURE 2.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the bathroom utility holder in its entirety is designated generally 6 and includes a substantially rectangular body portion 7 composed of a rear wall 8, side walls 9 and 10, a front wall 11 and oblique front corner wall portions 12 and 13 which extend between the front wall 11 and the side walls 9 and 10, respectively. As seen in FIGURES 2 and 3, the body 7 has an open bottom 14 and an open top 15.
As best seen in FIGURE 2, the rear wall 8 has a plurality of inverted keyhole-shaped openings 16, selected ones of which receive driven fastenings 17 (FIGURE 3) for detachably mounting the holder 6 on a wall or other upright support 18, in which said fastenings are anchored. Heads of the fastenings 17 are capable of passing through the large bottom portions of the openings 16 and the shanks of said fastenings are capable of engaging through the restricted upper portions of the openings 16, so that the holder 6 can be applied to or removed from the wall or support 18 without detachin; he fastenings 17.
The side walls 9 and each has an embossed rib 19 on its inner side which is substantially U-shaped and which is provided with a substantially semicircular bottom portion 20 and a flared open top portion 21 which terminates at the open upper end 15 of the body 7, as seen in FIG- URE 3.
The holder 6 includes a top wall or cover 22 of the same marginal shape as the upper end of the body 7 and of approximately the same size. The marginal portion of the cover 22 is recessed around its under side, as seen at 23, to provide a marginal flange 24 which rests from the upper edges of the wall 8-13 and so that the bottom portion 25 of the cover 22, around which the recess 23 is disposed, fits into the open upper end 15 of the body 7. The
upper surface of the cover 22 is recessed to provide an elongated upwardly opening receptacle 26 which is located adjacent the front wall 11 and which has its longitudinal axis disposed parallel thereto. The receptacle 26 forms an ashtray in conjunction with two grooves 27 which are formed in the top surface of cover 22 and which has inner ends opening into the ashtray cavity 26 and the outer ends opening through peripheral edge portions 28 of the cover which overlie the front corner Walls 12 and 13. The cigarette receiving grooves 27 are shallower than the cavity 26, as seen in FIGURE 3.
The upper surface of the cover 22 is also provided with a recess 28, which is located behind the recess 26, to provide a holder for a drinking glass, not showfi. The recess 28 is preferably shallower than the recess 26', as seen in FIGURE 3.
The cover 22 may be provided, adjacent the ends of its thickened portion 25, with rectangular openings 29 forming toothbrush holders which are adapted to accommodate the handle portions of toothbrushes, not shown, which may be inserted downwardly therethrough.
The holder 6 also includes a roller or spindle 30 of a length to fit endwise between the side walls 9 and 10, and which is of a diameter such that its end portions are journaled in and supported by the semicircular bottom portions 20 of the U-shaped ribs 19, for mounting the roller detachably in the body 7.
With the cover 22 removed from the body 7, the roller 30 may be lifted upwardly and removed from the ribs 19 through their open upper ends 21. The roller 30 can then be inserted through the tubular core 31 of a conventional roll of toilet paper 32 which may be inserted intb the body 7 through its open top 15 with the roller or spindle 30, so that the ends of the spindle will enter the two U-shaped ribs 19 through their flared open upper ends 21 and will thereafter move downwardly into engagement with the semicircular bottom portions 20 of the ribs, for supporting the toilet paper roll 32 within the body 7. The cover 22 can then be replaced on the top of the body 7, as seen in FIGURES 1 to 3, so that the toilet paper roll 32 may be stored within the holder 6 in a substantially concealed position. The outer free end 33 of the toilet paper roll 32 will extend downwardly through the open bottom 14 to be grasped for rotating the roll 32 within the holder 6 for extracting or dispensing paper therefrom.
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to without departing from the function or scope of the invention, as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bathroom utility holder comprising a body having an open bottom and an open top, a roller, means detachably supporting and journaling said roller in said body, and a cover detachably mounted on and closing the open top of the body and having a portion extending into said open top and a surrounding marginal flange portion resting on the upper edge of the body, said cover having an upper surface recessed to provide an ash receptable including cigarette receiving grooves of a lesser depth than the remainder of said receptacle, said roller being adapted to support a roll of toilet paper in a substantially concealed position within the holder to be dispensed through the open bottom thereof.
2. A utility holder as in claim 1, and said upper surface of the cover being provided with a drinking glass receiving cavity disposed behind said ashtray receptacle.
