W. A. HATHAWAY.
WRENQH. No. 335,192. Patented Feb z, 1886.
- Smoawboz UNITED STATES PATENT rrncE,
WILLIAM A. HATHAWAY, OF NORTH KINGSTOVVN, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES H. AIWVOOD, OF APPONAUG, RHODE ISLAND.
WRENCH. A
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 335,192, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed June 18, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
vBe it known that I, IVILLIAM A. HATHA- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the town of North Kingstown. in the county of \Vashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches; and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawing, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention, A designates the handle of the wrench, pro vided at its end with a screw-driver, B. The handle A has the usual screw-threaded shank, G, terminating at its outer end in a serrated -inner jaw, D,which passes through a block, E, and extends beyond the same. An adjustingnut, to, engages with the screw-threads onthe.
its outer end, is formed with a curved socket, b, to form a seat for a similarly-formed lug, 0,
Serial No. 169,050.
(No model.)
on the outer or movable jaw, F, and is held therein by the links d, pivoted to the sides of thejaw and block. The jaw F is of the usual 5 form, and has back of the lug c a shank, e, to the under side of which is connected one end of a fiat spring, G, the free end thereof beariug on the block, thus retaining the movable jaw in position against the object gripped, the ,0 lug c and the seat or socket b forming the fulcrum for the jaw,
If preferred, two or more of the sockets b may be employed, and the block E have acorresponding number of holes for thepin of the links d, so that it can be changed to bring the jaw nearer to or farther from the block.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wrench, a block adapted to slide on the screw-threaded shank of the stationary jaw, and provided with a curved socket, in combination with a movable jaw connected to the block by pivotedliuks, and havingalug seated 5 in the socket, and a shank provided with a spring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. 'HATHAIVAY.
